Authorities in the Dominican Republic are investigating the disappearance of 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki, who went missing earlier this month during a spring break trip to Punta Cana with friends. Her family has accepted the possibility that she drowned and has requested authorities to officially declare her dead.
On March 6, 2025, Sudiksha, along with five friends, was last seen entering a beach area around 4:15 a.m. Surveillance footage shows her spending time on the beach before failing to return to her hotel room later that day. Her parents, Subbarayudu and Sreedevi Konanki, expressed their heartbreak, emphasizing that they are coming to terms with the tragedy. They revealed that both U.S. and Dominican authorities believe that their daughter drowned due to the ocean's dangerous conditions that night.
Joshua Riibe, a 22-year-old student from Minnesota, was reportedly the last person to see Sudiksha alive. He shared details in court regarding the incident on the night she went missing, explaining that the pair had been swimming and were overcome by a wave. "I was trying to make sure that she could breathe the entire time— that prevented me from breathing the entire time and I took in a lot of water," he explained. After assisting her back toward the shore, Riibe claimed he lost sight of her when he began to vomit seawater, not understanding the gravity of the situation at the time.
Konanki’s parents, believing drowning to be the cause of their daughter's death, are struggling with the anguish of what psychologists refer to as "ambiguous loss." This term describes a scenario where families struggle to process grief due to a lack of concrete answers about what happened to their missing loved one. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s office has been actively reviewing evidence alongside Dominican authorities, while the Konanki family awaits a final determination regarding any official declaration of Sudiksha's death.

Surveillance footage shows Sudiksha and her friends before they left one of the hotel parties, as well as scenes of their walk through the beach ahead of her disappearance.

The focus on Joshua Riibe as a person of interest has been a major part of the investigation. After Riibe’s recent court hearing, a judge granted a habeas corpus petition, meaning he will no longer face police surveillance; however, authorities are yet to return his passport. Riibe emotionally stated in court, "I can't go anywhere. And I really want to be able to go home, talk to my family, give them hugs, tell them I miss them." After 10 days in the Dominican Republic, he expressed a desire to return to his normal life.
