Tragic Death Of Passenger At São Paulo Metro Station

A man dies after being trapped between train doors at Campo Limpo station, raising safety concerns.

A tragic incident occurred on the morning of May 6, 2025, at the Campo Limpo Station on São Paulo's Line 5-Lilás, where a man lost his life after being trapped between the train doors and the platform. The accident took place around 8:00 AM, causing significant disruption to the metro service.

According to reports, the victim attempted to board the train despite multiple visual and auditory alarms signaling that the doors were closing. Unfortunately, he became stuck between the platform's safety door and the train, leading to a fatal outcome when the train began to move.

ViaMobilidade, the operator responsible for the Line 5-Lilás, expressed deep regret over the incident. In an official statement, the company confirmed that the man did not possess any identification documents, complicating efforts to notify his family. "At this moment, all efforts by the concessionaire are focused on identifying the victim and locating his relatives to provide necessary support," the statement read.

Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic and crowded platform at the time of the accident. Ygor Miranda de Sousa, an architect who was present, recounted the harrowing moment: "There were people trying to get on, and one person got caught in the door. Then, the safety door closed, and the train started moving. We only heard the sound of the body hitting the glass and bouncing back. The person ended up being crushed."

The incident raised concerns about safety protocols in place at the metro stations, especially regarding the operation of train doors. The Secretary of Public Security (SSP) has indicated that the matter is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department (Delpom), and further information will be provided as the investigation unfolds.

This tragic event is not the first of its kind in São Paulo's metro system. In March, a similar incident occurred at the Vila Prudente station on Line 2-Verde, where staff managed to intervene in time to save a woman who had also become trapped in the doors.

Following the accident, operations on Line 5-Lilás were temporarily modified to manage the situation, with reports of delays as authorities responded to the incident. However, by around 8:20 AM, the service was normalized.

As investigations continue, ViaMobilidade has committed to collaborating fully with authorities to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event. The company is also reviewing its internal procedures to enhance safety measures for passengers.

The loss of life has sparked discussions among commuters about safety measures and the need for better awareness of the dangers posed by train doors. Many passengers have voiced their concerns regarding the adequacy of current safety protocols and the importance of ensuring that such incidents do not occur again in the future.

As the community mourns the loss of the unidentified victim, it serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers present in everyday commuting. The focus now shifts to the ongoing investigation and the hope that lessons learned will lead to improved safety for all metro passengers.
