A tragic incident occurred at Fuji-Q Highland amusement park on February 28, 2025, when Iori Kamura, a 29-year-old employee, was killed during inspection work on the popular roller coaster known as 'Eejanai-ka'. The accident took place at approximately 11:50 AM, where Kamura was found pinned between the coaster car and the track by his colleagues.
According to officials from the Yamanashi Prefectural Police, the roller coaster was not operational at the time, as it was undergoing routine maintenance. Witnesses reported seeing Kamura work under the coaster when the vehicle unexpectedly moved, trapping him.
He was immediately taken to a hospital in Kofu city but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The deceased was identified as Iori Kamura, who resided in Fujikawaguchiko Town of Yamanashi Prefecture. The police confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident as potential workplace negligence.
Following the accident, Takeaki Matsumura, the president of Fuji-Q Highland, held a press conference around 6:30 PM, offering condolences to Kamura’s family and expressing the company’s commitment to cooperating with the investigation. "I express my heartfelt condolences to the parents and all involved. We will fully cooperate with the police and relevant authorities to investigate the cause as quickly as possible," said Matsumura, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
The incident has raised significant concerns about the safety protocols employed during maintenance operations at amusement parks, particularly the safety measures taken when employees work around moving parts of rides. During the press conference, Matsumura assured the public and park visitors of the safe operation of all other rides and expressed hope for the swift recovery of the park’s operational procedures.
Fuji-Q Highland management confirmed they would be reviewing the operational status of the 'Eejanai-ka' roller coaster after March 1, but safety of the employees will be prioritized.
This incident has drawn attention to the necessity for stringent safety standards within the amusement park industry, as similar occurrences can jeopardize not only employee safety but also the trust of visitors. A broader dialogue on safety practices and regulations may emerge as investigations proceed, aiming to prevent such tragic events from occurring again.
While fun and thrilling experiences await at amusement parks, it is imperative for operators like Fuji-Q Highland to maintain transparent and rigorous safety protocols, especially following such tragic accidents. The loss of Iori Kamura serves as a stark reminder of the importance of employee safety and vigilance within the industry.
The investigation remains underway as authorities seek to gather all relevant information to determine how such a catastrophic event could have unfolded during what is typically routine maintenance work. Colleagues and loved ones of Kamura undoubtedly mourn his untimely passing, reflecting on the dedication and hard work he displayed during his time at the amusement park.
