The Swiss snowboarding community is mourning the tragic loss of Sophie Hediger, who died at the age of 26 due to an avalanche incident on December 24, 2023. The snowboardcross athlete was buried by the avalanche at around 1:15 PM on the closed Black Diamond slope in Arosa, Switzerland. Despite the swift response from rescue services, Hediger could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Walter Reusser, CEO of Swiss-Ski, expressed his shock and condolences: "We are shocked and express our deepest condolences to Sophie’s family." He remarked how her untimely death cast "a dark shadow over the holiday season for the Swiss-Ski family. We are immensely sad. We will preserve Sophie’s memory honorably."
Hediger's accident occurred shortly after she and another snowboarder left the designated closed area. They were reportedly enjoying some freeriding when the avalanche struck, prompting her companion to immediately alert authorities and search for her. Rescue teams found Hediger around 3:30 PM and attempted to revive her, but unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful.
Throughout her promising career, Sophie Hediger achieved significant milestones, including her first two World Cup podium finishes last season. She also made her Olympic debut at the 2022 Winter Games held in Beijing, fulfilling one of her personal dreams. Her ultimate aspiration was to win a medal at the upcoming World Championships set to take place in the Engadin region of Switzerland.
