Starting from March 4, 2025, commuters and motorists around the Pigneto area of Rome will experience significant traffic changes due to the construction of the new Pigneto railway stop. This development is part of efforts to improve public transportation by connecting various lines and easing access.
The traffic alterations will primarily affect three key areas: Circonvallazione Casilina Ovest, Piazzale Prenestino, and Circonvallazione Casilina Est. Specifically, Circonvallazione Casilina Ovest will see closures starting from civic number 140 up to via del Pigneto, accompanied by a reduction of the roadway from via del Pigneto to piazzale Prenestino. Notably, the direction of travel will also be reversed, creating complications for regular commuters.
Despite these challenges, officials have assured pedestrians they will still have access across the overpass on via del Pigneto. An important change at Piazzale Prenestino will involve adapting traffic signals to allow continued travel on the western ring road and facilitate reversing direction on via Prenestina.
For Circonvallazione Casilina Est, parking will be removed near the construction area, yet pedestrian and vehicle traffic will still be permitted to pass through. This ensures minimal disruption, albeit with necessary adjustments to local driving routes.
One of the notable features of the new Pigneto railway stop is its connection to two significant rail lines: FL1, which runs from Orte to Fiumicino Airport, and FL3, which serves routes to Rome–Viterbo. This connection aims to streamline travel options for citizens and visitors, potentially easing congestion on the roads.
Rome's transportation authority, RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana), has stated, "During the weekend, railway traffic between Roma Tiburtina and Roma Ostiense will be interrupted for the works by RFI." This interruption highlights the urgency and considerable scope of the construction efforts, which are expected to last through the early stages of the railway stop's opening.
With these modifications set to begin, residents and daily commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly and remain informed about any additional traffic updates. The construction of the Pigneto railway stop marks a significant step forward for Rome’s transportation infrastructure, aiming to bolster connectivity and alleviate the increasing pressure on local roads.
