Toyota Yaris Cross Makes Waves With New Features

The latest model garners attention for its stylish design and improved functionality.

On February 27, 2025, Toyota unveiled a partially improved model of its compact SUV, the Yaris Cross, which has quickly become a hot topic among car enthusiasts and potential buyers alike. The vehicle's striking new design features a "black Toyota" emblem that many are calling "cool!" and has caught the attention of a diverse range of consumers.

The Yaris Cross, which first hit the market in August 2020, has been praised for its combination of strong design, practicality, and excellent fuel efficiency. With the recent updates, Toyota has made several enhancements to the vehicle, making it even more appealing to a wider audience. The improvements include making previously optional equipment standard across all grades, enhancing the overall user experience.

The entry-level 'X' grade now comes equipped with door mirror heaters and a display audio system as standard features, significantly increasing convenience for drivers. The 'G' grade has also received upgrades, including the addition of ETC2.0 and door mirror heaters, providing enhanced comfort. For those looking for more luxury, the 'Z' grade now boasts Display Audio Plus and ETC2.0 as standard, offering a higher level of functionality for long-distance driving.

Additionally, the KINTO-exclusive 'U' grade has been updated to include ETC2.0 and door mirror heaters, further improving comfort and convenience. Adding to the excitement, the special edition 'Z Urbano' has made its debut, showcasing a sophisticated urban design that features black-based accents, a unique two-tone body color, and high-quality interior materials.

The Z Urbano's exterior is characterized by its black Toyota mark, gloss black aluminum wheels, and stylish outer door handles, creating a more refined appearance compared to the standard model. Inside, the chic design is complemented by black-themed seating and color accents, providing a touch of elegance and comfort for drivers and passengers alike.

Performance-wise, the Z Urbano retains the same engine options as the base model's 'Z' grade, offering both a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a hybrid model. Buyers can choose between 2WD and 4WD configurations, catering to a variety of driving conditions. The pricing for the new Yaris Cross ranges from 2,046,000 yen to 3,234,000 yen for the standard model, while the Z Urbano is priced between 2,623,500 yen and 3,228,500 yen, making it competitive in the compact SUV market.

Sales representatives from various dealerships have reported a consistent demand for the Yaris Cross, particularly the 'Z' grade, which has become a favorite among consumers. A representative from a dealership in the Kanto region noted, "The Yaris Cross has been consistently ordered since before the improvements, with the Z grade being the most popular. The vehicle's appealing aesthetics and manageable size have particularly resonated with couples in their 20s and 30s." This demographic appreciates the vehicle's stylish design and affordability, making it an attractive option for first-time car buyers.

In the Kansai region, another sales representative echoed these sentiments, stating, "Despite a slight increase in price due to recent improvements, the Yaris Cross continues to be highly regarded for its cost performance. The Z Urbano, in particular, has gained popularity among young individuals looking for their first car, as it offers a unique design that stands out from the crowd."

In related news, Toyota's Yaris model recently reclaimed the top spot in domestic new car sales for the first time in four months, thanks in part to the improvements made to the Yaris Cross. According to statistics released by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) and the All Japan Light Motor Vehicle Association (Zenkeijikyo) on May 8, 2025, six out of the top ten models exceeded the previous year's sales figures, with the Yaris leading the pack.

The Honda N-BOX, which had held the top position until now, managed to maintain its sales level due to its own partial improvements and favorable low interest rate policies, but ultimately ceded the top spot to the Yaris. Meanwhile, Daihatsu vehicles saw significant increases in sales, particularly the Tanto and Move models, which experienced remarkable growth rates of 4.8 times and 29.7 times, respectively, compared to the previous year.

As the automotive market continues to evolve, the Yaris Cross stands out as a prime example of how thoughtful design and strategic improvements can drive consumer interest and sales. With its blend of style, functionality, and affordability, the Yaris Cross is well-positioned to maintain its popularity among a diverse range of buyers.

Looking ahead, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association has expressed cautious optimism about the future of the automotive market. "While it may be challenging to expect a large reactive increase in sales, we anticipate that the upcoming release of new models will invigorate the market," commented a representative from the association.

As Toyota continues to innovate and adapt to consumer preferences, the Yaris Cross, along with other models in the Yaris lineup, is likely to remain a key player in the competitive automotive landscape.
