The inaugural ACN EXPO EKIDEN 2025, held on March 16th, showcased fierce competition between corporate teams and university runners for the first time, culminating with Toyota Motor Corporation's decisive victory.
Starting at Expo Commemoration Park in Suita, Osaka, and finishing around Yumeshima, the race encompassed seven sections covering 54.5 kilometers. Toyota Motor completely dominated the event, clinching victory with a time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 48 seconds, leading from the outset.
Conditions during the race included light rain, with temperatures at 10.6 degrees Celsius, creating challenging circumstances for the runners. Despite this, Toyota’s team remained steadfast, showcasing their elite talents throughout the race.
Leading the charge was Yoshizu Taiwa, who honed his skills during the first section. Taiwa set the tone for the race, finishing with vigor and gaining momentum for the rest of the Toyota team as he placed first in his section.
But it was Taida Tomoki who truly stole the show. The half marathon record-holder stepped up during the third section, completing the 12.5 kilometers with outstanding pace. He finished his section at 34 minutes and 6 seconds, which translates to an astonishing 27 minutes and 17 seconds for 10 kilometers. His performance not only solidified Toyota's lead but also earned him the district prize for the best performance.
Reflecting on his achievement post-race, Taida said, "This time I won, but there are many things to learn from the students, so it was a good experience." He emphasized the value of competing against university teams, indicating how such rivalries can enrich athletic experience.
Notably, as Taida sped through his section, the race introduced innovative broadcasting techniques, including the use of 'runner cameras.' Kansai University's Sakahigashi Sohma, wearing a distinct green bib labeled 'STAFF,' filmed Taida’s run, capturing the excitement and intensity of the competition. The footage gained traction on social media, sparking conversations among fans who praised the unique presentation.
The buzz surrounding the 'runner camera' added to the overall thrill of the event, with viewers expressing their amazement online. Taida remarked, "I didn't particularly mind it," indicating his focus was squarely on his performance amid the new dynamic.
Following Taida, other key performances came from team members such as Samuel Mbatha and Uchida Yuta, who continued to secure Toyota’s lead throughout the remaining sections. The comprehensive teamwork showcased by Toyota athletes allowed them to maintain control of the competition, outperforming formidable rivals like Fujitsu, who secured second place, finishing 1 minute and 14 seconds behind. The Kokugakuin University team took the podium as well, finishing third, highlighting the competitive spirit at hand.
Despite the underwhelming weather, the event sparkled with energy as it concluded the ekiden season. The winning team did not only take home the champion’s title, but they also earned respect from their competitors, including the university teams they bested—which have often dominated the collegiate running scene.
Taida concluded with enthusiasm for the future, expressing anticipation for the upcoming track season, particularly the highly awaited 10,000-meter national team selection event on April 12, 2025, in Kumamoto. He stated, “I want to rest well and prepare thoroughly for it.” His confidence is bolstered, especially following such significant completion against talented university foes.
The ACN EXPO EKIDEN 2025 succeeded not only as a race but also as a groundbreaking encounter between business and learning institutions. The performance from all teams highlighted the ever-growing potential of Japanese athletics, reinforcing the impact of collaboration and rivalry on sportsmanship. This event will surely leave its historical mark as both athletes and fans recognize its unique significance.
