Toyosho Ryu Debuts As New Yokozuna At Spring Tournament

Sumo wrestling community celebrates the return of champions and aspirants alike.

On March 1, 2025, the sumo wrestling community held its breath at the Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine located in Osaka City as the festivities began to celebrate the rise of Toyosho Ryu, the newly crowned Yokozuna. Over three and half years had passed since the birth of this prestigious title. This upcoming Spring Tournament not only marks Toyosho Ryu's debut but also carries historical weight, being among only five new Yokozuna victors since the six-tournament system was established.

February witnessed the ritual called Dohyosai at the Edion Arena, leading enthusiasts to discuss the growing anticipation surrounding Toyosho Ryu and his fellow competitor, Sekiwake Daieisho. Having proven formidable with 11 wins at the previous tournament, Daieisho’s growth has captured the attention of the judges, especially as he aims for elevation to Ozeki status.

The stakes are particularly high this time, as both Toyosho Ryu and Daieisho look to establish solid ground for success. "The responsibility is high. I want this too,” Toyosho Ryu expressed, reflecting on the expectations associated with his title, reported by Mainichi Shimbun.

When the tournament kicks off on March 9, Toyosho Ryu will find himself facing Komusubi Abi. The statistics lean against him, sporting a record of two wins and three losses against Abi over the past year, alongside suffering two consecutive defeats. Nevertheless, Toyosho Ryu intends to initiate his Yokozuna career on the right note. Last tournament, he emerged champion, successfully overcoming formidable opponents, including former top-tier wrestlers.

Meanwhile, the spotlight also shines on former Ozeki, 2021 Nagoya champion, who will be returning to the dohyō after being off for 235 days due to injuries sustained during the Nagoya tournament. His rank had dropped dramatically, missing five consecutive tournaments and landing him at #21 Sandanme. Surrounded by traditional Osaka culture and deep ties to the community through his past experiences, he aims to revive his former glory.

This challenging comeback sees him pitched against East Sandanme #22, Amene, during the first events, beginning after 10:30 AM. With the audience eager to witness his performance, there are palpable emotions surrounding how he will measure up following such a lengthy absence. His history offers hope; previously, when reduced to similar ranks, he emerged victorious with perfect performances.

Returning to the main competition, leading Ozeki aims are under scrutiny, especially Takakeisho, who is unfortunately unable to participate this time around. His absence leaves significant room for opportunity as others look to capitalize on the chance to rise through the ranks. The interspersed match-ups will constitute the crux of this pivotal spring event, as pressure mounts on both Ozeki and Sekiwake for favorable outcomes. All eyes remain glued to the outcomes of their performances.

Spring Sumo Tournament begins against this historic backdrop fraught with challenges, enthusiasm, and competition. Everyone is tuned to the ambitions of Toyosho Ryu and the wrestling elite who are eager to see if tradition can thrive through new champions and resilient returnees. This coming competition will distinctly underline the wrestling spirit existing within the Japanese sumo arena, bringing both excitement and passion back to audiences worldwide.
