A large desert tortoise found itself on quite the adventure after escaping from its home at the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch. This tortoise, affectionately named "Stitch," was rescued from the busy Interstate 10, located between Casa Grande and Tucson, Arizona.
The drama unfolded on July 30 when a concerned motorist spotted Stitch slowly trying to navigate across the highway. The motorist quickly alerted authorities, prompting the Arizona Department of Public Safety to spring to action.
Trooper Steven Sekrecki arrived at the scene, where he and the motorist collaborated to safely remove the tortoise from the potentially dangerous roadway. Thanks to their combined efforts, Stitch was unharmed as he was escorted off the busy highway.
This wasn’t the first time Stitch had wandered far from home; he had traveled approximately three miles from the ranch. The determination of this tortoise to roam was highlighted by the hand-written name visible on his shell, which helped authorities identify him.
After rescuing Stitch, DPS troopers reached out to the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch, which was just three miles away. The ranch confirmed Stitch was one of their beloved tortoises, recently escaping due to damage caused by storms earlier in the week.
Danna Cogburn, the ranch owner, explained to reporters how several tortoises had taken their opportunity to escape. "Stitch found the one small hole, and he was the only one small enough to fit through it," she said with equal parts amusement and disbelief.
Following his daring escapade, Stitch was safely returned to the ranch, where staff were relieved to have him back. The experience not only showcased the adventurous spirit of this tortoise but also highlighted the collaborative efforts of local motorists and law enforcement to protect wildlife.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety expressed their gratitude via social media, stating, "They were very thankful to have him back safe." This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping track of our animals, especially during extreme weather conditions.
Stitch's story has charmed many, prompting discussions on social media about pet safety and awareness during storms. It also shines a light on the various forms of wildlife rehabilitation practices and outreach efforts by local ranches.
Animals like children crave exploration, and Stitch's determined spirit encapsulated the push for freedom many creatures embody. It’s heartwarming to see community members rallying together for the safety of a wandering tortoise, proving once again how caring for our environment and its inhabitants is a shared responsibility.
Today, Stitch is back safe and sound at the ranch, continuing his leisurely life among the other tortoises. For many, his tale becomes another chapter of community compassion and quick action when faced with unusual situations.
