A powerful storm struck the city of Olímpia, São Paulo, on Saturday afternoon, October 21, causing significant flooding and submerging vehicles at the Thermas dos Laranjais water park. According to local reports, the rainfall exceeded 130 millimeters within just a few hours, leading to what has been classified as torrential rain. The downpour resulted in the downing of at least ten trees throughout the area.
Images shared on social media depict the rushing waters engulfing chairs and tables typically used by visitors, with mud washing over the park’s pools and slides. Numerous cars parked at the complex were left underwater, primarily belonging to employees of the park. The city officials stated the situation was dire but reported no injuries or fatalities.
Following the storm’s onslaught, the management of the Thermas dos Laranjais announced it would remain closed on Sunday, October 22, as a precautionary measure to prioritize the safety of both visitors and staff. The public was directed to their official website for updates on ticket information and possible rescheduling of visits.
Across Olímpia, the storm's impact was widespread. The Defesa Civil reported extensive flooding leading to major road inconveniences, particularly on Avenida Aurora Forti Neves, which became completely impassable. Additional neighborhoods were also hard-hit, including Landão, Nakamura/São Benedito, and Cohab IV, experiencing significant water accumulation. Schools along with main roads suffered damages, prompting the dispatch of local emergency services including the Corpo de Bombeiros, Police Militar, and municipal guards to assist residents and mitigate damages.
Local residents are now facing clean-up efforts as city crews continue to assess the extent of the damage inflicted. Notably, several homes were inundated, including one residence requiring rescue assistance for an elderly individual. Thankfully, the water levels of the creek running through the town have started to stabilize.
The storm on Saturday was characterized as unusually severe, raising concerns among authorities as forecasts predict more rainfall in the coming days, compelling local government to adopt preventative measures to avoid similar occurrences. While the immediate response has been commendable, efforts continue as teams work diligently to restore normalcy to the affected areas.
Overall, the flooding at the Thermas dos Laranjais marks significant disruption to both the local tourism industry and daily life for Olímpia’s residents. With many seasonal visitors expected for the upcoming holiday periods, the park’s management faces the task of determining when it can safely reopen.
