Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod triumphed over HC Sochi with a decisive 6-3 victory on Tuesday night in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) regular season, thanks largely to Nikita Artemonov’s outstanding performance, which included a hat-trick.
The game played at the Nizhny Novgorod Arena saw its initial momentum shift swiftly. Sochi struck first with Danil Avershin scoring at 09:14, assisted by Nikita Nikov and Stanislav Machulin. But the home team responded quickly. Just five minutes later, at 14:14, Nikita Shavin equalized for Torpedo, setting the stage for what became the Artemonov show.
After the equalizer, Torpedo seized control of the game. They scored three consecutive goals within the second period to take charge. The first of these came from Andrey Belevich at 28:26, followed closely by Artemonov's first goal at 31:17. Artemonov added his second goal, pushing the score to 4-1 only two minutes later, assisted once again by Yegor Vinogradov and Bulgarian player Nikolai Atanasov.
Vinogradov himself joined the scoring at 45:52, bringing Torpedo’s tally to five, and once again Artemonov rounded off the scoring at 50:59, completing his hat-trick and putting the home team comfortably at 6-1.
Despite their heavy defeat, Sochi showed resilience and managed to secure two more goals through Avershin and Sergey Popov, but this was not enough to turn the tide.
The match statistics revealed Torpedo’s dominance over Sochi. They outshot the visiting team 82-48, with 47 shots on goal compared to Sochi’s 34. Torpedo also edged out Sochi on face-offs, winning 35 to 24. The statistics indicated not just the victory but the sheer volume of opportunities created by the home team.
More than just the score, the match signified Torpedo’s remarkable comeback following their recent loss streak, allowing them to clinch their fifth victory out of their last six games, placing them 8th overall on the Western Conference standings with 64 points. Meanwhile, Sochi languishes at the bottom of the same conference, holding only 44 points.
Players such as Artemonov, who was lauded for his performance, are pivotal for Torpedo’s ambitions as the season marches on. With his two assists added to his three goals, he showcases not just skill but also plays as team-oriented, creating opportunities for his teammates.
The atmosphere during the match was electric, as fans rallied behind their team, celebrating each goal with heightened enthusiasm. Torpedo’s coach emphasized the importance of maintaining their momentum as they look forward to upcoming matches.
Looking at the future, both teams now prepare for their next challenges, with Sochi's management under pressure to improve their position, whereas Torpedo hopes to continue building on their recent success.
