Toronto Rings In New Year With Fireworks And Free Transit

Celebrations include waterfront fireworks and parties with free rides to promote safety.

Toronto is gearing up for one of its biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations yet as it prepares to ring in 2025 with fireworks, festivities, and free public transit services. The City of Toronto has planned extensive celebrations on December 31, 2024, to make sure residents and visitors can enjoy the arrival of the new year safely and joyfully.

This year, the centerpiece of the festivities will be a spectacular 10-minute fireworks display, which will begin at midnight. Set against the stunning backdrop of Toronto’s inner harbour, the display promises to dazzle attendees as it synchronizes to specially chosen music, creating a magical atmosphere to welcome 2025. City officials have indicated this will be one of the largest fireworks shows across Canada, setting the stage for an unforgettable night.

Those attending can watch the display from various designated spots, including the Toronto Music Garden, Sherbourne Common, Sugar Beach Park, and HTO Park, among others. The fireworks show will be livestreamed on the CultureTO YouTube channel, starting from 11:45 p.m. local time and featuring performances leading up to the grand countdown.

Beginning at 10 p.m., the City will also host pop-up events to engage the crowds. These events will feature musical performances and dance sessions at main locations, including Sherbourne Common and the Toronto Music Garden. Notably, drag performer Sanjina DaBish Queen will lead the countdown, promising to make the night even more celebratory. City Mayor Olivia Chow will help usher festivities to their peak just before the fireworks.

To accommodate the expected influx of attendees, the City of Toronto, along with provincial transit agency Metrolinx, is making public transit free on New Year’s Eve. Starting at 7 p.m. on December 31, passengers can use the TTC, GO Transit, and the UP Express without the need for tickets. This initiative aims to encourage safe transportation and reduce road congestion during the busy celebration.

The free transit service will last until 8 a.m. on January 1, 2025. Riders are reminded to tap their PRESTO cards, as they will not be charged for the rides, enabling transit authorities to collect data on the holiday travel patterns. According to David Allard, Vice President of Marketing at Campari Canada, “Forty Creek is committed to creating... safer transportation options,” underscoring the importance of responsible drinking and travel.

Additional transit services and late-night trains will be available, particularly on the GO Transit system. Special services include extra trains on the Lakeshore East and West Lines during the evening, as well as extended operations of the UP Express. The last train departing Union Station is scheduled for 2:55 a.m. on the Milton Line, making the celebrations both accessible and safe for everyone.

While public transportation is encouraged, drivers should be aware of scheduled road closures to avoid congestion. Authorities have planned closures on key streets from 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until 1 a.m. on January 1, affecting Queeens Quay West, Bay Street, and York Street. City officials anticipate these closures will help manage the expected crowds, promoting safe travel through transit.

The TTC subway will operate later than usual, running until 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day, ensuring everyone can find their way home. With complimentary rides and extended hours, city officials have reiterated their commitment to providing safe travel options. “For over a decade, the goal has been simple: empower Canadians to prioritize safety,” said Kevin de Graaf, Senior Brand Manager at Corby Spirits, highlighting the longstanding tradition behind the free rides.

With festivities across the city gearing up, and excitement building over the upcoming celebrations, Toronto is set to welcome 2025 with joy, laughter, and vibrant displays. The combined efforts of local authorities, sponsors, and event organizers aim to make this New Year’s Eve unforgettable for residents and visitors alike. So whether you’re planning to watch the spectacular fireworks, enjoy live performances, or simply cheer with friends as the clock strikes midnight, Toronto promises to be the place to welcome the new year with style.
