TORONTO — A special weather statement is currently affecting Toronto and southern Ontario as residents brace for rain and strong winds this weekend. Environment Canada has forecast rain and wind, with accumulations of up to 25 mm possible on Sunday.
On Saturday, March 15, 2025, the temperatures are expected to soar between 16°C and 19°C, significantly above the seasonal norm of around 4°C. This uncharacteristically warm weather will be coupled with clouds and showers, alongside the risk of thunderstorms by early afternoon.
Environment Canada warns of wind gusts reaching between 60 and 80 km/h, with the potential for loose objects to be tossed about, which could lead to injuries or property damage. “Localized flooding could occur in low-lying areas as the ground remains frozen and unable to absorb the rainfall, which will likely lead to water pooling on roads,” the national agency reported.
The rain is expected to commence early Saturday afternoon, with the bulk of the system moving overnight, enhancing the risk of thunderstorms. “By Sunday morning, be prepared for thunderstorms, along with very strong winds,” explained CityNews meteorologist Jesse Uppal.
Sunday, March 16, 2025, is set to bring even more rain, with Environment Canada projecting rainfall ranging from 10 to 25 mm across Toronto and nearby areas such as Mississauga, Brampton, and Hamilton. Due to the anticipation of these conditions, there are warnings about potential power outages as the winds may be strong enough to uproot limbs and cause disruptions.
“On March 16, accumulations of rain could lead to localized flooding, particularly where drainage is poor,” says the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. They have advised caution near rivers and other bodies of water due to increased flow levels and the dangers associated with rising water levels.
Heading past Sunday, temperatures are predicted to drop quickly, plummeting to below freezing just in time for St. Patrick's Day on Monday, March 17, 2025. The highs will only reach about 6°C, making evident the temperature swing expected over the weekend.
While Saturday eases residents back to the warmth of spring with temperatures peaking at 19°C, Sunday will feel dramatically different as storms approach. “Thunderstorms are likely to pop up as the low-pressure system makes its way through the region,” noted Uppal.
Authorities are repeating their warnings to check weather alerts and prepare for wet conditions. They encourage all residents to secure their belongings and avoid outdoor activities if severe weather warnings are issued.
Toronto’s weather forecast this weekend presents not only warm spells but also the possibility of significant rainfall and rapidly changing weather dynamics, reminding everyone to remain vigilant.
"Expect conditions to deteriorate as we head to Sunday, with chances of thunderstorms and heavy winds,” Jesse Uppal cautioned. Information about what residents should wear is being shared, advising layers for Saturday, waterproof jackets, and sturdy footwear for the stormy conditions expected on Sunday.
Despite the warm temperatures this Saturday, forecasters urge caution. With stormy weather on the way, the next couple of days could see significant changes, with flooding, wind damage, and cooler, calmer weather afterward.
Remember to stay informed and prioritize safety as you navigate the unexpected changes Toronto's weather will bring this weekend.
