Toronto Argonauts Trade Dejon Allen To B.C. Lions

The Argonauts bolster their defense by acquiring linebacker Ryder Varga and future draft picks

The Toronto Argonauts have officially announced their trade with the B.C. Lions, marking significant movement within the Canadian Football League (CFL) as the teams prepare for the upcoming season.

On January 6, 2025, the Argonauts traded American offensive lineman Dejon Allen to the Lions, receiving Canadian linebacker Ryder Varga and the Lions' second-round pick in the 2026 CFL Draft. This move signals Toronto's strategic reshaping as they look to balance their roster.

Argonauts Head Coach Ryan Dinwiddie expressed gratitude toward Allen, who has been integral to the team's success over the past four years, contributing to two Grey Cup championships. "We appreciate the hard work and sacrifices Dejon and his family have made for us to win two Grey Cup championships together," Dinwiddie remarked. "He was a big part of our success over the past four seasons. We wish him all the best in the future."

Allen, who stands six feet two inches tall and weighs 300 pounds, was recognized as the CFL's Outstanding Lineman for the 2023 season. He played for the Argonauts for four seasons, participating in 63 regular-season games and being named to the CFL All-Star team for the last two years. His impressive performance has bolstered the Argonauts' offensive line, making this trade significant for both teams.

The B.C. Lions, who allowed a league-high 43 sacks last season, are eager to improve their offensive line. Lions General Manager Ryan Rigmaiden emphasized the necessity for this enhancement: "Improving the offensive line was something our team needed. Adding a talent like Dejon immediately improves our run and pass game, adding grit and toughness to our identity. He's a special player at a premier position and we're proud to have him."

To fill the gap left by Allen's departure, the Argonauts may turn to Canadian offensive lineman Sage Doxtater, who joined the team late last season. Doxtater, standing at six feet seven inches and weighing 343 pounds, has the potential to step up significantly as the season approaches.

On the other hand, Ryder Varga, the linebacker acquired by the Argos, has demonstrated his ability on the field, boasting 73 defensive tackles, five special-teams tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery over 18 games with the Lions last year. Varga, who played college football at the University of Regina, was previously drafted by the Lions as the 29th overall pick in the 2022 CFL Draft. He has also earned accolades such as being named First Team All-Canadian and Canada West Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

The trade not only reshapes the roster but also raises expectations for both teams as they gear up for the new season. Toronto has been proactive, also extending contracts for defensive backs Tavarus McFadden and Mark Milton, as well as signing Craig James and defensive lineman Daymond Williams. These moves reflect the Argonauts’ commitment to strengthening their defensive unit as they prepare for another shot at the Grey Cup.

McFadden has had an impressive run, appearing in 12 games last year, with 29 tackles and two interceptions, including notable performances like his 78-yard touchdown return against the Ottawa Redblacks. Meanwhile, Milton showed his versatility with 24 tackles, along with significant contributions on special teams. The Argonauts are clearly focused on solidifying their team as they invest strategically in both defense and offense.

Both teams and their fans are eagerly awaiting the season's start, where the impact of these trades will soon be visible on the field. Allen's transition to the Lions is particularly watched closely, considering his stature as one of the top offensive linemen and the hopes pinned on him to bolster the Lions’ struggling protection.

With rosters reshuffled and new talents poised to make their marks, the stakes couldn't be higher for the Argonauts and Lions as they gear up for the 2025 CFL season. This trade not only makes waves within both teams but might also set the tone for the entire league moving forward.
