Tomás Cuello Joins Atlético Mineiro Amid Transfer Buzz

New Argentine forward faces early challenges following debut and injury concern.

Tomás Cuello, the 24-year-old Argentine forward, has made headlines this month as he officially joined Atlético Mineiro after being signed from Athletico-PR for approximately 6 million dollars, roughly R$ 35 million. The announcement, made on December 30, 2023, marked the start of a new chapter for the young striker, who aims to make his mark within the competitive sphere of Brazilian football.

Cuello debuted for Atlético Mineiro on February 1, 2024, during the fifth round of the Campeonato Mineiro against Villa Nova. Entering the match at the 23rd minute of the second half, Cuello entered to replace fellow player Júnior Santos, as the team was already leading 1-0. Although he had limited opportunities to showcase his potential, Cuello’s performance was characterized by notable speed and physical energy particularly on the right flank, though he stumbled on some passes.

After the match, Cuca, Atlético Mineiro’s head coach, elaborated on Cuello's playing position. He stated, "Foi hoje (na direita), porque coloquei ele e o Bernard juntos..." indicating Cuello's adaptability as he assumed the right-wing role alongside Bernard on the left.

While Atlético Mineiro celebrated their new signing, Cuello’s move had been met with urgency at Vasco da Gama, who sought to strengthen their squad with swift wingers. Throughout the transfer window, the club made several unsuccessful attempts to acquire Cuello and other candidates who matched their criteria, as they grappled with injuries affecting their key players.

The Vasco team, short on attacking options due to injuries to Adson and David, had been vocal about their needs. They aimed to fill the gap left by the departures of Gabriel Pec and Marlon Gomes, highlighting the urgency of signing Cuello as their primary target. Despite managing some key signings to bolster their defense, Vasco's leadership turned their focus on acquiring Cuello following the conclusion of the Brasileirão.

The club made various offers, including one valuing around $4.5 million (approximately R$ 25 million), but Atlético Mineiro outbid them with their offer of $6 million (about R$ 36 million) which clinched Cuello's transfer to the Minas Gerais outfit.

On February 4, 2024, worry set back at Atlético Mineiro when Cuello sustained discomfort during the match against Athletic. After executing a dazzling dribble without touching the ball, the Argentine forward felt pain in his left ankle and had to be substituted shortly after at the 36-minute mark of the first half. The incident triggered concern among fans who had witnessed Cuello interacting with AC during the warming up prior to the match.

Post-injury, he seemed visibly unhappy as he was taken off the field by Júnior Santos, reflecting how much he hoped to contribute to the team. His early injury may impede his participation against rivals Cruzeiro, set to happen on February 9, 2024, raising questions about his availability moving forward.

The initial excitement surrounding Cuello's signing now intertwines with concern, as fans await updates on his health and prospects on the pitch. Meanwhile, Vasco, who had their eyes on Cuello, continues to search for viable attacking options, scouring the transfer market desperately for other potential signings to bolster their squad.
