According to Kerridge, he recognized, "If I continue like this, I won’t live long enough to enjoy life or see my children grow up." His wake-up call led him to make pivotal changes to both his diet and overall lifestyle.

One of the first major changes was ditching alcohol altogether. Kerridge, who admitted he had an addictive personality, stated, "I stopped drinking all by myself. I knew what I wanted to do and then I got on with it. It was all about mental strength." He acknowledged the challenges of giving up alcohol, noting some days are harder than others, but the decision was freeing, allowing him to channel his previous energy spent on drinking now onto his work.

Tom's dietary overhaul began with cutting back on carbs and implementing what he calls the "dopamine diet". He explains, "It’s impossible to lose weight and keep it off if you don’t enjoy what you eat."

His typical meals included vegetables, tinned beans, eggs, and plenty of dairy—his so-called "dopamine heroes" like full-fat cheese, double cream, and yogurt. He pointed out, "There is nothing wrong with having a flapjack during the afternoon lull. Everything else has to be balanced though." Kerridge's philosophy is clear: wholesome can also be delightful.
