Through social media posts and industry remembrance, Tollywood is abuzz with key milestones, as film personalities celebrate successes and mourn losses.
On February 25, 2022, Alia Bhatt delivered what many would agree is one of her career-defining performances in Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Fast forward to three years on, and the actress took to Instagram to commemorate this significant anniversary by sharing sketches of her iconic character, Gangubai. Bhatt's post, adorned with the caption “#3YearsOfGangubaiKathiawadi,” reignited conversations around the film's impact and her portrayal of the complex lead. The movie, based on S. Hussain Zaidi's Mafia Queens of Mumbai, explores the life of Gangubai, who rises from adversity to become a formidable figure within Mumbai’s notorious red-light district.
Notably, Gangubai Kathiawadi has gained significant acclaim, culminating with Bhatt winning the 'Best Actress' award at the 69th National Film Awards. Following her success, there's more excitement brewing with Bhatt reuniting with Bhansali for his upcoming project, Love And War, which will feature co-stars Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. Besides this, Bhatt recently celebrated Bhansali's birthday on February 24, marking the occasion with joyful posts on Instagram.
She shared images from the celebration, including one of the ensemble cast and the director with a cake in front of them—an affectionate acknowledgment of their collaborative spirit. Her post included heartfelt words: “A quick break from night shoots to celebrate our director… happy birthday magician sir (and happy 3 to our Gangu too).” She also cheered for Vicky Kaushal, who recently enjoyed box office success with his film, Chhaava.
Meanwhile, the Tollywood scene is also welcoming fresh talent with the debut of Bhairavi, who is set to star opposite Aakash, the son of celebrated singer Sunitha, known for his role in Sarkaru Noukari. Bhairavi will feature as the lead female character under the banner of Tathastu Creations. The film's producer, Thati Balakrishna, expressed his enthusiasm about the project, noting Bhairavi's impressive performance, especially in emotional scenes, even as it marks her first appearance on screen.
Balakrishna added, “This movie is set against a village backdrop and is a romantic love suspense comedy.” With Bhairavi perfectly embodying the nuances of her role, there is great anticipation surrounding how her debut will resonate with audiences. After completing the post-production work, the team is expected to announce the movie's title and release date soon, promising excitement for fans of Tollywood narratives.
While the atmosphere remains celebratory, it is tinged with sorrow due to the passing of Kedar Selagamsetty, film producer and entrepreneur, who died on the same day as Bhatt’s celebration—February 25—but of 2025, after battling health issues. Kedar was highly regarded within the film fraternity, maintaining close relationships with notable figures such as Allu Arjun and Vijay Deverakonda. He had produced Gam Gam Ganesha and was linked with several projects involving major stars until the projects were shelved.
His absence leaves a gap within the community, not only because of his production achievements but also due to his entrepreneurial endeavors as co-founder of Jubilee 800, a popular pub located on Jubilee Hills Road Number 45. Kedar will be remembered for his contributions to the industry and the connections he nurtured among the stars of Tollywood.
The juxtaposition of celebration and loss highlights the vibrant and multifaceted nature of the Tollywood film industry. While Alia Bhatt continues to shine with her performances and the gradual emergence of new talents like Bhairavi promises rejuvenation for the scene, the industry collectively mourns the passing of one of its own, Kedar Selagamsetty.
