Tokyo Verdy Aims For First Win Against Kashima Antlers

After opening season with loss, Verdy looks to bounce back with renewed energy and key tactical changes.

Tokyo Verdy is gearing up for a pivotal clash against Kashima Antlers on the 22nd at Kashima Soccer Stadium, seeking their first win of the 2023 season following a disappointing defeat to Shimizu S-Pulse.

After finishing 6th last year as newly promoted participants, Verdy enters its second season with soaring ambitions but the looming threat of experiencing the well-known "sophomore slump". The team's performance against Shimizu was not what they hoped for, as they left the National Stadium with a 0-1 loss—a stark reality check for players and fans alike.

New forward Daiki Yamami, who has officially joined from Gamba Osaka, made his starting debut but struggled to make his mark on the game. Reflecting on the opener, he admitted, “We wanted to press from the front, but we allowed too much freedom to their center-backs.” He recognized the need for improved defensive strategies moving forward. Yamami also noted, “We didn’t create opportunities to dribble forward, shoot, or cross, and I needed to create numerical advantages when receiving the ball.”

With valuable lessons learned, the squad is now refocusing their efforts on the upcoming match against Kashima. Yamami has previous success against this opponent, scoring twice in their last home match and contributing to their victory.

“I’m eager to play against Kojiro (Nono), who knows my playstyle. While there’s no special pressure, I’m excited about this matchup,” Yamami expressed. “Kashima is known for their intensity, and if we don’t match them there, victory will be difficult.”

Head coach Hiroshi Jofuku, now entering his fourth year at the helm, has set ambitious goals for his team this season. Following the loss to Shimizu, he showed his frustration, saying, “We played to Shimizu’s storyline rather than our own.” Jofuku insisted on the importance of restoring the team's identity and reflecting on what made Verdy competitive last season.

Emphasizing mental and tactical aspects, Jofuku explained, “Our biggest problem was not being able to express our playing style.” He acknowledged last year’s success when expectations were exceeded, and he aims to re-establish the team’s characteristic grit, aggression, and resilience against Kashima.

With tactical changes anticipated, Jofuku highlighted the necessity of utilizing their midfield effectively, led by midfielders Koki Morita and Kosuke Saito, to improve build-up play. “When facing teams with four defenders, we must occupy uncomfortable positions and create defensive challenges,” said Jofuku.

Ahead of the clash, the squad is determined to come back stronger. Jofuku expressed the need for the team to rediscover their purpose and cohesiveness. “We want to show the spectators what we stand for and strive for results,” he continued, stressing the responsibility to convey their objectives clearly after the uninspired opening match.

The lineup for the match against Kashima includes goalkeeper Mateus, and Yamami alongside other prominent forwards such as Goki Yamada and rookies like Issei Kumotori.

Despite the obstacles, Verdy aims for redemption against Kashima, who are formidable opponents. Last season, Verdy managed to claw back from 0-3 to draw 3-3 away, showcasing their resilience. Their upcoming key match will reflect the team’s growth and aspirations as they look to garner support from their fans.

“Winning is our ultimate goal, but we want to deliver exciting football. If we can create scoring chances, our supporters will enjoy watching us,” Yamami added, emphasizing his desire for impactful performances.
