The Marunouchi Area Projection Mapping Executive Committee, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is set to illuminate the streets of Marunouchi with the world-renowned art of Ukiyo-e during the "Marunouchi Projection Mapping: Tokyo Great Ukiyo-e" event.
Running from February 21st to 25th, 2025, this extraordinary showcase offers attendees the opportunity to witness the stunning colors and dynamic compositions of Ukiyo-e art projected on the sides of prominent buildings, transforming the urban space over five enchanting nights.
On each day of the event, stunning projections will fill the walls of the Marunouchi Building from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and the exterior of the Yurakucho Itocia from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The projections will consist of breathtaking visual displays artistically representing traditional Ukiyo-e scenery, celebrated as cultural treasures of Japan.
This visual spectacle promises to captivate audiences, featuring various themes including "The Collaboration of the Six Great Ukiyo-e Artists" and the natural imagery depicted within Ukiyo-e paintings. The event not only aims to promote Japanese art but also serves as an innovative way to connect the historical Tokyo experience with modern audiences.
Attendees are also encouraged to participate in the newly introduced stamp rally, where the first 300 individuals each day can collect stamps from designated locations, and answer quick surveys to receive coupons amounting to ¥1,000 to use at participating businesses nearby. This is part of the committee's efforts to encourage local engagement and shopping during the event.
Those eager to explore more cultural displays can enjoy additional events happening alongside this projection mapping. For example, the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum will host a special exhibition titled "From Edo to Tokyo—Ukiyo-e and Modern Prints," demonstrating the evolution of urban landscapes through art spanning the Edo period to modern times.
Also, for fans of television drama, NHK will present a limited-time exhibition featuring elements from its current historical drama, providing viewers with interactive displays and promotional materials surrounding the show's themes and characters.
Residents and tourists alike are invited to discover the rebirth of Ukiyo-e art, allowing them to appreciate the fusion of history and cutting-edge technology as they encounter this distinctive showcase. Visitors should not miss out on this unique experience of seeing Japan’s historically rich art brought to life through vibrant projections against the backdrop of the cosmopolitan Marunouchi area.
