Florida men's basketball coach Todd Golden has been cleared of all allegations following the conclusion of a four-month Title IX investigation initiated by the University of Florida. The university announced its findings on Monday, stating clearly, "After a thorough investigation, which included dozens of interviews over the past months, the University of Florida has found no evidence" of wrongdoing.
This investigation began after complaints were filed against Golden on September 27, alleging sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, and stalking. Despite these serious claims, the investigation yielded no substantiated evidence to support them, allowing the university to officially close the case.
The repercussions of this investigation were felt throughout the basketball program as Golden continued to coach amid these allegations. The university spokesman, Steve Orlando, remarked, "The University of Florida takes these matters seriously and works deliberately to uphold due process for everyone." Following the investigation's closure, Golden expressed relief and gratitude to his supporters on social media.
"The last several months have been challenging for my family and me as this process dragged on," Golden stated, stressing the importance of allowing the investigation to proceed without jumping to conclusions based on the allegations. His attorney, William Shepherd, reinforced Golden’s stance, stating, "Coach Golden and I have respected the process throughout..." and highlighted issues with the confidentiality of investigations, referencing cases of leaked information.
Golden was accused of making unwelcome sexual advances on social media, sending inappropriate images, and even stalking behavior, which included taking unsolicited photographs of female students and sending them via social media. These grave accusations were originally reported by the Independent Florida Alligator and were taken seriously by the university.
The findings from this investigation coincide with one of the most successful seasons for the Gators’ basketball team. The Gators have started the season with 18 wins out of 20 games, holding the No. 5 ranking nationally. Golden's ability to focus on the team’s success amid personal and professional challenges has been commended by his colleagues and fans alike.
The University Athletic Association (UAA) released its own supportive statement indicating their confidence in Golden through the investigation process. "Throughout this process, Coach Golden has demonstrated tremendous focus and professionalism, and we commend him for it," said the UAA.
Following the dismissal of his case, Golden is expected to continue directing his energy toward the remainder of the basketball season and has hinted at considering his legal options for any potential defamation claims against those who made the allegations.
