Timon Haugan Dominates World Cup Slalom Race

Norwegian skier celebrates second victory with impressive performance at Alta Badia.

Norwegian skier Timon Haugan claimed victory at the men’s slalom race of the 2024/25 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, held on December 23 on the Gran Risa slopes of Alta Badia, Italy. Haugan’s win marks his second career World Cup victory, adding to his previous success from earlier this year.

On this sunlit day, Haugan showcased his prowess by dominating the event, finishing with a combined time of 1:45.40. He finished 1.13 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Loic Meillard and 1.26 seconds clear of his fellow Norwegian, Atle Lie McGrath. Haugan held onto his first advantage from the first run, where he was the fastest man on the slopes, and aggressively increased his lead throughout the second run, even as the snow conditions deteriorated under the warm sun.

“I tried to keep it simple, keep it clean and really attack,” Haugan expressed after his triumph. “That was the main goal today, only focus on the ski, try not to think about the results and have fun. It can't be be more perfect, winning – that's what we all want – and I'm so happy to get a break now and with this win.”

The competition was particularly fierce, and competitors, including Meillard, rose to the challenge. Meillard finished surprisingly strong, completing the second run with the second-fastest time among the qualifiers, moving from interim leader to second place overall. His performance demonstrated resilience as he dealt with back pain, which has affected him throughout the season.

Haugan had started the day with hopes to capitalize on his advantage, which he had built during the first leg of the race where he led McGrath by 0.31 seconds. His daring strategies on the slope allowed him to increase his lead against Meillard, making strategic maneuvers even as the snow began melting, leaving ruts on the course.

McGrath, who followed closely after Haugan and Meillard, showcased his skills as he secured third place, just 0.13 seconds shy of Meillard. The elite athletes faced various challenges, including changing conditions on the Gran Risa, but Haugan's consistent technique made the difference.

The current standings highlight the changing dynamics of World Cup rankings, with Henrik Kristoffersen maintaining his position at the top, though Haugan's win puts him firmly on the radar among top contenders. Kristoffersen finished fourth at this event, 1.31 seconds off the pace.

Overall, this exciting race adds another layer of depth to the already competitive slalom World Cup stage, particularly with significant events like the World Championships on the horizon, set to take place soon.

Haugan's victory reinforces his status as one of the skier's to watch this season, proving unstoppable on the slopes of Alta Badia, as he gears up for future competitions and aims to build upon this success.
