Timeless Ties: Vietnam And Japan Celebrate 50 Years Of Relations

The release of a significant academic work marks five decades of cooperation and cultural exchange between the two nations.

The formal release of the academic document "50 Years of Vietnam-Japan Relations (1973-2023)" marked a significant milestone, underscoring the deep-rooted historical bond and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan over the past five decades. This event was organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and celebrated not only the 50-year diplomatic relationship established since 1973 but also the many successful collaborations between the two nations.

Key figures at the event included Mr. Yuichiro Yuji, the Head of the JICA Vietnam Office, and Ambassador Naoki Ito of Japan, alongside representatives from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, including Mr. Dang Xuan Thanh, who emphasized the multidimensional nature of the Vietnam-Japan relationship.

During his speech, Mr. Yuji highlighted the significance of the academic document, stating, "I hope this document will be widely used for teaching and research about Japan's ODA and the friendship between Vietnam and Japan." Such sentiments were echoed by Ambassador Naoki Ito, who remarked, "Vietnam and Japan share common values and history, and I believe this book will motivate more people to learn about our friendship and developments."

The 50-year framework of Vietnam-Japan relations has evolved through three significant periods: the foundations laid from 1973 to 1991, significant economic cooperation from 1992 to 2001, and comprehensive development from 2002 to 2023. Mr. Thanh noted, "This document is not only about economics but also highlights the cultural and educational aspects of Vietnam-Japan relations," providing insights across various sectors, from investment to education.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, Japan has been pivotal as the leading provider of Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Vietnam. The assistance has greatly contributed to Vietnam's socio-economic development, enhancing investment and fostering educational exchanges. The collaboration is seen as mutually beneficial, with Japan escaping from the shadows of its colonial past and Vietnam leveraging Japan's successful development experience.

Mr. Thanh emphasized the importance of this new academic work, stating it serves as both historical documentation and valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and students alike. Over the years, Vietnam has emerged as one of the countries with the highest number of Japanese language learners, reflecting the growing interest and engagement with Japanese culture and society.

By gathering various experiences and insights, the document extends beyond mere historical recounting. It articulates future opportunities for cooperation, taking considerable note of the socio-political climate and cultural exchanges over the decades.

Looking to the future, JICA and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences expressed hopes to distribute the book freely among major universities and research institutes across Vietnam to bolster education and research related to Japan.

The release of "50 Years of Vietnam-Japan Relations (1973-2023)" is more than just the culmination of academic research; it is also viewed as the cherished outcome of continuous partnership and mutual respect between two nations ready to face future challenges hand-in-hand.

Overall, such collaborations enrich the educational fabric of Vietnam and help sustain the spirit of friendship and cooperation established between Japan and Vietnam for the last half-century.
