Timberwolves Dominate Jazz 138-113 For Fifth Straight Win

Anthony Edwards scores 36 points, leading Minnesota to victory over struggling Utah.

Salt Lake City, UT - The Minnesota Timberwolves extended their impressive streak by toppling the Utah Jazz 138-113 at the Delta Center on January 30, 2025. This victory marked the Timberwolves' fifth consecutive win and their second triumph on back-to-back nights, proving their status as a formidable team entering the latter half of the season.

Leading the charge, Anthony Edwards showcased his talent, scoring 36 points, 16 of which came during a decisive third quarter. Beyond just scoring, Edwards also excelled with 11 assists, orchestrated the offensive play, and was instrumental during the Timberwolves’ explosive 44-22 quarter. His efforts were complemented by rookie Rob Dillingham, who recorded his career-high with 19 points, and Rudy Gobert and Luka Garza, both contributing 16 points to the scoreboard.

"We played as one unit tonight," said Edwards post-game. "We were sharing the ball, and the shots started falling. That's when we're at our best." Minute by minute, Minnesota maintained pressure, and even with point guard Mike Conley sidelined due to a thumb sprain, the team demonstrated remarkable synergy, dishing out 38 assists, equaling their season-high.

The Jazz, who have struggled throughout the season, found themselves unable to capitalize on early momentum. Collin Sexton led the home team with 19 points, supported by Keyonte George—who gathered 23 points on perfect shooting (7-for-7). John Collins and Jordan Clarkson each contributed 16 points, yet it was insufficient to change the tide, as Utah fell to their eighth consecutive loss.

Early on, the Jazz appeared to seize control, racing to a 25-10 lead thanks to Lauri Markkanen's three-pointer. But the Timberwolves quickly responded, rallying to outpace Utah, especially during pivotal runs. A turning moment came early when Naz Reid, returning from illness, sank four straight three-pointers, fueling Minnesota's surge and helping them close out the first quarter decisively.

The game reflected stark contrasts between the two franchises' current trajectories. Minnesota's record now stands at 26-21, showing potential for playoff contention. Meanwhile, Utah, with their dismal 10-36 record, has dropped to the bottom of the Western Conference standings, struggling to find their footing.

Looking beyond the individual performances, the Timberwolves have been riding high on their recent form, winning nine of their past ten contests. This clash against the Jazz was anticipated to be another mismatch, with Utah drastically underperforming this season.

"They've been rough this year, but we still had to play our game and show up," said Dillingham about the teams’ differencing standings. The Timberwolves are set to face the Washington Wizards next, eager to extend their winning streak and build momentum.

The losing effort has raised questions for Jazz management, as they seek to reverse fortunes. With several players underperforming, the upcoming matchup against the Orlando Magic offers another chance for retribution.

After the game, Jazz coach Will Hardy acknowledged the need for adjustment. "We need to focus on the basics, getting our leading players back to form, and fostering our young talent. We have to stay relentless, it's the only way we can change our narrative now," he stated.

This latest matchup added to the growing list of challenges for the Jazz, emphasizing their current tough situation and the dynamic nature of the league as teams position themselves for the second half of the season. Prospects look brighter for the Timberwolves, who are embracing their winning culture and eyeing postseason aspirations.

Looking at the numbers, the Timberwolves shot 61.3% from the field for the night, setting their season-high shooting percentage and demonstrating their offensive efficiency. On the flip side, the Jazz has been averaging 118.5 PPG against them, underlining defensive woes. Yet, as Minnesota continues to build their identity, the focus will be on sustaining their level of play against various opponents going forward.
