Tim Merlier Triumphs As Paris-Nice Kicks Off

The 2025 edition of the iconic cycling race features intense competition and spectacular stages across France.

The Paris-Nice cycling race, often referred to as the "Race to the Sun," officially commenced on March 9, 2025, from Le Perray-en-Yvelines, Île-de-France, kicking off what promises to be one of the most exhilarating editions in recent memory. This is the 83rd iteration of the famous event, which will run until March 16, featuring eight stages over approximately 1,200 kilometers.

The first stage on March 9 was particularly noteworthy, with Tim Merlier from Belgium clinching victory at the line, defeating French sprinter Arnaud Démare. The 156.1 km flat stage saw the racers navigate through some of the picturesque scenery of the Yvelines region. The competitors were flagged off at 11:45 AM, with the finish projected between 3:13 PM and 3:33 PM, depending on the pace set by the peloton.

On this year's route, the riders will face varied terrain challenges, starting with the mostly flat stages expected during the initial days. Notable among these is the team time trial on the third day, which spans 28.4 kilometers and takes place around the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. This stage is particularly significant, as it tests the teams' synchronization and speed.

The course will also feature intense climbs for the climbers among the peloton, culminating with seven categorized cols before making its way to Nice. Jonás Vingegaard, the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France winner, is competing and is seen as one of the favorites, especially after securing third place in the 2023 Paris-Nice.

"Jonas Vingegaard has returned to the 'Race to the Sun' with the ambition of claiming victory, laying the groundwork for his next Tour de France bid," noted race director Christian Prudhomme. He elaborated on the diverse challenge the race presents, likening it to the "Tour de France, in eight days" – emphasizing the mix of routes catering to sprinters, rouleurs, puncheurs, and climbers throughout the stages.

French cycling fans will be especially eager to watch Julian Alaphilippe, returning to the Paris-Nice after five years, now racing with the Tudor team. Alaphilippe shared his enthusiasm: "I am super motivated, very happy to be back on the roads of Paris-Nice. It’s been some time since I’ve participated; I was mostly focused on racing in Italy. It’s nice to come back to these races, especially with my new team—I'm excited!" His return marks significant anticipation from fans and competitors alike.

The second stage on March 10 will continue to build excitement, with racers set to compete between Montesson and Bellegarde over 183.9 km. Following this will be the challenging team time trial on March 11, juxtaposed to later stages where climbers will have the limelight, especially on March 14, with the longest stage of 209.8 km. This day will see competitors ride from Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban to L'Etang de Berre, testing their endurance significantly.

Severe challenges await, as competitors will need to tackle seven categorized climbs throughout the competition, placing pressure on both seasoned cyclists and hopefuls. Vingegaard's teammate, Matteo Jorgenson, is anticipated to play a significant role as Vingegaard’s right-hand man, and the dynamic duo aims to secure strong finishes for their team, Visma.

Audience engagement is also heightened this year with extensive coverage planned, with France Télévisions and Eurosport providing live broadcasts of the stages. The first stage was aired live at 1:35 PM on France 3 and Eurosport, guaranteeing no fan misses the action. Daily broadcasts from March 10 through March 14 span from 2:45 PM on both channels, allowing viewers to follow the race's progression closely. For the penultimate stages and the final day, coverage will be available from early afternoon, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the exciting conclusions.

The concluding stage on March 16 will feature a scenic 119.9 km loop around Nice, promising not only to crown the winner of the Paris-Nice but also to deliver thrilling views of the French Riviera. This year’s edition is already shaping up to be memorable, not just as another cycling competition, but as a showcase of determination, strategy, and endurance against the backdrop of beautiful landscapes.

Fans and enthusiasts can expect drama, intense competition, and inspiring stories throughout the entire duration of the race. The excitement surrounding this year’s Paris-Nice is palpable as it continues to highlight the very best of road cycling.
