Tim Merlier Claims First Stage Victory At Paris-Niza 2025

Belguim's Tim Merlier takes the lead with impressive sprint finish on inaugural stage.

The Paris-Niza 2025 cycling race kicked off on March 9, 2025, with excitement buzzing among viewers and participants alike. The first stage, spanning 156.1 kilometers, took competitors through the scenic perspectives of Le Perray-en-Yvelines, where Belgian cyclist Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step claimed victory, establishing himself as the first leader of the race.

Merlier showcased his prowess during the final sprint, finishing with a time of 3 hours, 32 minutes, and 3 seconds, which translates to an impressive average speed of 44.2 km/h. He crossed the finish line with confidence, raising his arms to celebrate his triumph as he outpaced Arnaud Démare (Arkéa - B&B Hotels) who took second place, and Alberto Dainese (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), who came third. The Colombian Juan Sebastián Molano contributed to the excitement, wrapping up the stage with a commendable fourth-place finish.

“This is my first stage victory here, and I am proud of it. Visma made the peloton nervous, and then Alaphilippe's Tudor attacked, but we stayed alert. The team positioned me well and I was able to successfully contest,” Merlier said shortly after his win. This victory marks Merlier’s fifth win of the season and the 55th of his professional career, underscoring his status as one of the favorites as the Tour progresses.

The stage began under overcast skies, offering the perfect atmosphere for cycling. Visitors could feel the anticipation as the race started with the classic flavor of France. Almost immediately, Samuel Fernández (Caja Rural Seguros RGA), Taco Van der Hoorn (Intermarché), and Alexandre Delettre (TotalEnergies) formed the first breakaway. They brought some adventure to the day, but the main peloton wasn’t far behind, ensuring their efforts were closely monitored.

During the race, the terrain included three third-category climbs, where many sprinters remained unshaken. Merlier’s team, alongside his competitors, maintained control throughout the event. Despite the breakaway gaining some distance, the main pack swiftly reeled them back, setting the stage for what would become a thrilling finish.

With approximately 19 kilometers remaining, Julian Alaphilippe came alive during the Cota de Villiers-Saint-Frédéric, making significant moves, yet the tenacious Matteo Jorgenson kept pace alongside him. This anticipation escalated as the climbers and sprinters alike prepared for the flurry of last-minute attacks, each vying for the coveted top positions before reaching the finish line.

At just two kilometers from the finish, tension peaked when cyclists Skjelmose, Tarling, and Trentin launched their own push for glory, momentarily breaking away with a lead of 10 seconds. The peloton, feeling the urgency, kicked it up a notch to neutralize this threat. With the finish line narrowing upon them, it became evident the race was anyone’s to win.

The final moments were electrifying, characterized by chaos as the lead changed hands multiple times, all leading up to Merlier's decisive move. His well-timed acceleration sent him soaring past the competition, sealing the win with ease. The excitement among onlookers was palpable as he crossed the finish line, earning the first yellow jersey of the race.

Now leading the general classification, Merlier holds the title with six seconds to spare over Démare and Jhonatan Narváez (UAE). The implied promise of rivalry is evident as the cyclists prepare for the next stages. Stage two, set to take place on March 10, 2025, will continue the momentum with another route mirroring the first—183.9 kilometers with two third-category climbs included. Enthusiasts remain eager to see what this next leg has to offer.

Expectations are high not only for Merlier but also for cyclists like Molano, who is eager to seize another chance. Performance levels will surely fluctuate as the race progresses, but for now, all eyes are on the swirling yellow smock donned by the champion from Wortegem Petegem.

The Paris-Niza remains one of cycling's most celebrated events, and as the race continues, it serves as both preparation and showcase for talents as they gear up for the Giro d'Italia. With the stakes heightened and the competitors fine-tuning their strategies, the thrill of the race will keep cycling fans on the edge of their seats.
