Tijuana Faces Weather Shift With Santa Ana Winds

Residents prepare for cooler temperatures and possible rain over the upcoming weekend.

Tijuana is poised for significant weather changes as the region prepares for the arrival of new polar air mass and intensified Santa Ana winds, expected to reshape local climate conditions starting January 23, 2025. Residents should brace themselves for lower temperatures, particularly with alerts for increased wind speeds and potential rainfall over the weekend.

According to forecasts, the polar air mass entering Mexico will bring chilly air across the northwest, northeast, and eastern regions of the country. This shift is anticipated to create cooler daytime temperatures throughout Tijuana and neighboring municipalities, with daytime highs reaching around 26°C on January 23, before temperatures start to drop significantly.

The National Weather Service indicated winds from the east at 15 to 30 kilometers per hour could escalate to high gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour, particularly affecting hilly areas and canyons. This increase will continue until the end of the week, marking conditions conducive to the spread of fires and potential power outages due to downed lines.

The protection civil department warned, "No quemar basura, pastizales o encender fogatas, ya que, debido a la velocidad del viento, el fuego se propaga más rápido y puede provocar un incendio difícil de controlar." This advice highlights the heightened dangers posed by the weather, prompting residents to take safety precautions seriously.

Looking forward, forecasts suggest the likelihood of rain during the weekend, starting Saturday, January 25. A probability of 80% is anticipated, leading to estimated rainfall accumulations of approximately 4.5mm, with even higher chances and totals on Sunday and Monday, reflecting about 90% probability and approximately 7.8mm of additional rain expected.

Temperatures during this period will fluctuate, with daytime highs ranging from 10°C to 16°C, dropping to colder conditions at night, typically between 9°C and 14°C. These developments necessitate vigilance among residents, particularly those living near areas susceptible to flooding or high-risk zones.

The protection civil department has encouraged the public to monitor weather updates closely and to adhere to safety guidelines during this tumultuous weather phase. They reiterated the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, “Mantenerse al pendiente de los avisos y comunicados que esta Dependencia.” This includes proactive measures for families to devise emergency plans should the need arise.

It’s also recommended for the public to be cautious near electric lines and to avoid crossing streams which might swell due to increased rainfall. Authorities are urging residents to reduce outside activities during wind storms and provide guidelines such as staying away from large trees and structures, which may pose hazards during high winds.

Officials have also advised caution when traveling during windy conditions. They recommend reduced speeds and alertness for potential hazards such as smoke or dust clouds which may impact visibility. Families are encouraged to keep flammable items out of reach of children and to check emergency supplies regularly.

For Tijuana residents, the arrival of polar air and Santa Ana winds signifies not only temperature extremes but also the importance of community preparedness and responsiveness. Awareness and adherence to weather information can mitigate risks associated with flooding and fire hazards, ensuring safety and well-being throughout the drastic changes anticipated over the coming days.

With these weather changes, citizens are reminded to stay informed on local forecasts and remain vigilant as Tijuana navigates the turbulent weather conditions of early 2025.
