Tijuana Braces For Heavy Rainfall And Flooding

Residents advised to prepare for severe weather conditions impacting daily life this week.

Tijuana residents are bracing for inclement weather as heavy rainfall continues to impact the city through Thursday, February 13, 2025. The forecast predicts scattered showers during the day, intensifying with heavy downpours anticipated both this afternoon and evening. The Director of Municipal Civil Protection, José Luis Jiménez, reported, "For today, scattered showers are expected during the day, with heavy rain anticipated this afternoon and evening."

Despite the adverse weather conditions, Jiménez confirmed there would be no suspension of classes on Thursday. He emphasized, "Classes will not be canceled for today, but we will reevaluate for tomorrow's schedule at noon." Nevertheless, if conditions worsen, officials may decide to close schools on Friday, February 14.

The weather report from AccuWeather indicates Tijuana will experience temperatures ranging between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius, coupled with high chances of precipitation. For the daytime, there is approximately 80% likelihood of rain, which heightens to 96% as night falls. This situation urges residents to prepare adequately for potential flooding and slippery roads.

The meteorological patterns suggest imposing winds as well, with gusts projected to reach up to 41 kilometers per hour during the day and potentially climbing to 48 kilometers per hour overnight. With such intense weather conditions, there could be localized street flooding, which is common during these kinds of storms. Municipal authorities advise citizens to exercise caution, particularly when traveling on roads.

Cold temperatures are also expected to linger throughout the week, potentially posing health risks for vulnerable individuals. The air’s chill will make it feel cooler, so layers of clothing are recommended to cope with the fluctuated temperatures. Residents should prepare for the impending wet conditions, suggested to carry umbrellas and wear waterproof clothing.

Tijuana lies within Baja California, where its semi-arid climate can often lead to abrupt weather changes, particularly during the winter months. On occasions, storms can bring unseasonable downpours, causing significant disruptions.

Civic leaders encourage Tijuana residents to remain diligent about weather updates. The heavy precipitation forecast and the cold temperatures mean checking local weather services for any changes every day can help avoid any surprises. Jose Luis Jimenez concluded on this note by reinforcing the importance of vigilance: "Keep informed about weather conditions impacting your daily life.”

This proactive approach ensures citizens can plan their activities accordingly and stay safe during this spell of heavy rainfall. Tijuana's resilience stands strong against the oncoming weather, as municipal services mobilize to keep citizens informed and prepared amid these storms.
