Tijani Babangida Receives Community Support After Family Tragedy

Former football star’s family faces hardship after tragic accident; fundraising efforts unite fans and teammates.

Former football star Tijani Babangida is receiving tremendous support from the community following the tragic loss of his brother Ibrahim and son Fadil, as well as the severe injuries suffered by his wife Maryam during a recent car accident.

The 51-year-old Babangida, who captured the hearts of many during his football career, recently recounted the accident which occurred on the road from Kaduna to Zaria, Nigeria. Babangida explained how he lost control of the vehicle and crashed head-on with a stationary truck. "I didn’t see the truck until it was too late," he remarked, detailing the aftermath of the disastrous incident. His brother died on impact, and his son, only one year old, succumbed to brain damage the following day.

9Months later, Babangida is still grappling with the emotional weight of this tragedy. "This trauma will stay with me for the rest of my life. I think about it nearly every day," he confessed. His wife, who was left severely injured and has sadly lost one of her eyes, was initially unaware of their son’s fate due to her coma. Her gradual realization about their son’s death was heart-wrenching for Babangida, who had to inform her of the tragic news. "I can't lie to her. I had to tell her his name: Fadil, and then she understood he was gone. It's been challenging, but she remains strong," he added.

Despite overwhelming grief, Babangida has found solace and encouragement from many of his former teammates and supporters. Over the subsequent weekend, initiatives were organized to help fund the necessary surgeries for Maryam, which will cost approximately €170,000. Many of his old team members from the illustrious 1994-1995 season have stepped up, including Maurice Graef and Huub Stevens, who mobilized their networks following the accident. They not only reached out to offer emotional support but also took practical steps to create fundraising campaigns under the banner “SupportBaba.”

Financial backing has materialized from across the Netherlands, signifying how deeply Babangida is remembered and cherished by football fans. "It’s unbelievable to see how people are coming together to help my wife gain a chance at recovery. I feel grateful to my fellow players, many of whom joined forces to raise awareness," he expressed.

Babangida was primarily celebrated for his playing days at Ajax, where his dazzling performances thrived under the guidance of coach Louis van Gaal. Notably, his remarkable goal during the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals against Atlético Madrid remains fresh in the minds of fans. "Louis said to me last week, ‘I’m so happy about the goal against Atlético. You used your brain to chip the ball over the goalkeeper'. It wasn't easy, but it went just right," he recalled fondly, stating how much he values the relationships he formed during his career.

The idea of nostalgia and camaraderie around Babangida is palpable, as he recalls moments from his playing days and the bonds forged during his long career. "There were fans who didn’t get to see me play but heard stories from their parents. I never realized how deeply rooted the affection was for me here," he said with tears of gratitude.

Encouragingly, the support for Babangida extends beyond conventional football circles. A poignant tribute followed shortly after the accident, when fans held up banners during matches featuring his former clubs, celebrating his contributions and supporting his family time of need. Memorable phrases like “We’re with you Baba” can be seen at matches, signifying widespread community solidarity not only for him but for his family during these trying times.

Babangida is also touched by the generous contributions received via social media platforms, with individuals, even those with limited means, expressing solidarity by donating small amounts. “A child who watched me train once as a five-year-old sent €5 last week. This gesture moved me deeply,” he shared.

Fate and destiny also play pivotal roles in Babangida's narrative, as he reflects on the importance of faith during adversity. "For me, my story resembles something divine. Allah knows the day you will depart this world. I see these events as part of a larger script. My life is intertwined with God's greater plan, whether I embrace it or not. It’s life’s reality," he stated thoughtfully.

Operating from the Bernardushoeve, where he temporarily resides, Babangida remains steadfast. His drive to support his wife and honor the memory of his lost family members fuels his efforts. A book reflecting on his life, his football legacy, and the recent tragedy is also being put together, promising to share his intimate story with others. Babangida is probably not just returning, but re-emerging to offer warmth and trust—qualities he has always come to represent throughout his career.

Babangida’s spirit remains unbroken, proud to embrace the support extended from people who wish to help his wife regain her health. With the support circle growing bigger than he ever imagined, it's clear his community stands unwaveringly behind him during this difficult chapter. The football pitch may have been where he garnered fame, but the love from his supporters illuminates the true essence of his legacy.
