Wests Tigers maintain momentum with a thrilling victory at Campbelltown as Sea Eagles secure crucial win against Parramatta

In an electrifying Sunday double-header, the Wests Tigers faced off against the Warriors at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, while the Sea Eagles took on the Eels at 4 Pines Park. The stakes were high as both matches unfolded in front of eager fans, with the Tigers looking to maintain their winning momentum and the Sea Eagles hoping to bounce back from a tumultuous week.

The Wests Tigers entered the match against the Warriors with a strong position in the standings, sitting in 7th place, while the Warriors were just behind in 9th. With the home crowd rallying behind them, the Tigers were determined to capitalize on their recent successes, having secured victories over Parramatta and the Dolphins in the previous rounds.

As the match kicked off, the Warriors struck first. Adam Pompey showcased his strength and agility, scoring the opening try just four minutes into the game, giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead after Luke Metcalf's successful conversion. However, the Tigers quickly responded, with Fonua Pole crashing over the line in the 11th minute to level the scores at 6-6, thanks to Api Koroisau's conversion.

The first half continued to be a back-and-forth battle, with both teams displaying skillful play despite the wet conditions. Marata Niukore put the Warriors back in front with a try in the 35th minute, extending their lead to 12-6 after Metcalf's conversion. But the Tigers were not to be outdone; Starford To'a scored a crucial try in the 38th minute, leveling the scores at 12-12 just before halftime.

As the second half began, the Warriors regained momentum with a try by Metcalf in the opening minute, converting his own try to give the Warriors an 18-12 lead. However, the Tigers responded swiftly, with Solomona Faataape scoring in the 49th minute, tying the game once again at 18-18 after Koroisau's conversion.

The turning point came in the 52nd minute when Latu Fainu burst through a gap in the Warriors' defense to score, putting the Tigers ahead 24-18. Coach Benji Marshall praised his team's fighting spirit, while Warriors coach Andrew Webster expressed frustration over defensive lapses that cost them crucial points.

Injury concerns loomed large for the Tigers, as Adam Doueihi was ruled out before the match due to a groin injury, and Samuela Fainu left the field in the first half with a leg injury. Despite these setbacks, the Tigers held their ground, showcasing resilience and determination.

Meanwhile, at 4 Pines Park, the Sea Eagles faced the Eels in a match that saw captain Daly Cherry-Evans leading his team after announcing his departure from the club at the end of the season. The Sea Eagles were looking to put a tumultuous week behind them and secure a much-needed victory.

The Sea Eagles started strong, with Jason Saab scoring the first try in the 8th minute, followed by Lehi Hopoate in the 16th minute, giving Manly a 10-0 lead. Reuben Garrick's successful conversion extended their lead to 12-0 by halftime. However, concerns arose for the Sea Eagles as Tom Trbojevic did not return for the second half due to a suspected MCL injury, leaving fans anxious about his condition.

After the break, the Eels managed to get on the scoreboard with Joe Ofahengaue scoring in his 200th match in the 55th minute, narrowing the gap to 14-6. But the Sea Eagles quickly regained control, with Corey Waddell scoring in the 62nd minute to push the lead to 20-6, followed by Tolutau Koula's try in the 67th minute, extending the advantage to 26-6.

Despite a late consolation try from Shaun Lane in the 79th minute, the Eels fell to a disappointing 26-12 defeat, marking their fourth consecutive loss. The Sea Eagles, on the other hand, celebrated a much-needed victory, with Cherry-Evans reflecting on the importance of focusing on the game amidst off-field distractions.
