Tigers Celebrate Opening Day With Thrilling Home Opener

Fans gather in droves as Detroit welcomes Chicago for three-game series

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers kicked off their 2025 home schedule in style, welcoming the Chicago White Sox to Comerica Park on Friday, April 4, with a vibrant atmosphere that felt more like a holiday than a typical baseball game. More than 200,000 fans flocked to downtown Detroit, celebrating the unofficial holiday known as Opening Day, a cherished tradition for many in the Motor City.

The weather added to the festive mood, with temperatures reaching a pleasant 49 degrees, marking the warmest Opening Day since 2015. As the gates opened at 10:30 a.m., eager fans lined up, ready to soak in the pre-game festivities. The first 15,000 attendees were greeted with "Built Different" rally towels, setting the tone for an exciting day ahead.

Among the highlights of the day was the ceremonial first pitch thrown by comedian and Detroit-native Keegan-Michael Key, who expressed his excitement, saying, "I used to work right across the street at Hockeytown when it was the Second City way back when, and I watched them build this stadium. To be able to come here and do this is like a dream come true." Key also predicted a Tigers victory, confidently stating, "This is such an old, storied franchise, we're one of the best franchises and oldest franchises in Major League Baseball." He forecasted a 6-1 win for the Tigers over the White Sox.

The pre-game festivities included a performance of the national anthem by Grammy winner and Saginaw-native Brian d'Arcy James, followed by a flyover featuring an A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” from the 107th Fighter Squadron. Fans were encouraged to be in their seats by 12:35 p.m. for player introductions, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m.

The Tigers, who started their season with a road trip, were looking to capitalize on the energy of their home crowd. Manager A.J. Hinch announced an exciting starting lineup, featuring Jack Flaherty on the mound. The full lineup included Justyn-Henry Malloy (DH), Kerry Carpenter (LF), Riley Greene (CF), Spencer Torkelson (1B), Colt Keith (2B), Zach McKinstry (RF), Dillon Dingler (C), Trey Sweeney (SS), and Javier Báez (3B). The White Sox countered with Jonathan Cannon as their starting pitcher, alongside a lineup that included Miguel Vargas (3B), Luis Robert Jr. (CF), and Andrew Benintendi (LF).

As the game approached, the atmosphere around Comerica Park was electric. Fans celebrated not only the return of baseball but also the camaraderie that comes with it. Lucie Sertich, a longtime Tigers fan, described the atmosphere as "electric," emphasizing the sense of community that permeates Opening Day. "It is my favorite day of the year. I love coming to Opening Day," she said.

For many, Opening Day is about more than just the game itself; it’s a family tradition. Ten-year-old Addison Poirier was up bright and early for her family’s annual tailgate, dressed in a custom-made Tigers tutu. Her father, Nicholas Poirier, shared, "My family's been coming down here for about 21 years this year. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good one this year." Meanwhile, two-year-old Finan Almasy was experiencing his first Opening Day, tucked into a Tigers jersey worn by his mom, Marie.

The day also featured a series of block parties and celebrations throughout downtown Detroit, with food trucks, games, and live music. The Downtown Detroit Partnership hosted its third annual Opening Day Tailgate Party at Grand Circus Park, providing fans with a place to gather and celebrate. The block party included food and drink trucks, a DJ, and games, creating a festive environment that extended beyond the stadium.

Fans who couldn’t secure tickets to the game found plenty of ways to join in on the fun. Local bars and restaurants offered special menus and events, turning the entire downtown area into a lively celebration of baseball. The Detroit Home Opener Festival at 440 Madison St. promised to be the "Largest Opening Day Party," complete with heated tents, entertainment, and local food vendors.

As the clock ticked closer to game time, the excitement was palpable. Fans were reminded that all tickets at Comerica Park are digital, encouraging them to download their tickets ahead of time for a smooth entry. With the first pitch looming, the Tigers were eager to improve their 2-4 record and secure an early season win against a division rival.

Despite their rocky start on the road, the Tigers found themselves tied for first place in the American League Central Division, thanks to the close standings among the teams. This Opening Day not only marked the start of the Tigers' home schedule but also a chance for fans to rally behind their team and hope for a successful season ahead.

As the game commenced, the energy in the stadium soared, with fans cheering loudly for their team. The Tigers were poised to make a statement against the White Sox, hoping to turn their season around with a strong performance. The excitement of Opening Day in Detroit was undeniable, and as the players took the field, fans could feel that anything was possible. With the promise of a new season ahead, the Tigers and their supporters were ready to embrace what lay ahead.

For those unable to attend, the game was broadcasted on FanDuel Sports Network and available for streaming on MLB.tv, ensuring that Tigers fans everywhere could join in on the action. As the day unfolded, it was clear that Opening Day is not just about baseball; it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and hope for the future.
