Tiger Woods Announces Death Of His Mother Kultida

Kultida Woods, the driving force behind Tiger's remarkable career, passes at age 80, leaving behind memories of love and support.

Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday the heartbreaking news of his mother Kultida Woods' passing, sharing on social media, "It is with heartfelt sadness... she was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible." The absence of any specified cause of death following her demise adds solemnity to the occasion.

Kultida, known affectionately as Tida, was 80 years old. Just last week, she had surprisingly attended Woods' TGL match, actively participating until the end. Woods detailed her vibrant spirit and unwavering support through his golf career, attributing much of his success to her dedication and encouragement.

Born in Thailand, Kultida met Earl Woods during his service as a U.S. Army Green Beret, with the two marrying shortly after his return to the United States. They settled first in New York and later moved to California, where they welcomed their only child, Eldrick, known as Tiger, in December 1975. Earl often took the spotlight as Tiger's coach and father figure; yet, it was Kultida who dynamically shaped her son's character, frequently referred to as the driving force behind his remarkable career.

Over the years, she became known for instilling values within her son, teaching him about effort and discipline. Tiger once remarked, "My mom doesn’t get enough credit. Everyone thought it was my dad when I went on the road, which it was, but Mom was at home. If you don’t know, Mom has been there my entire life." Her influence was evident not only due to her maternal role but also through her unwavering support during Tiger's tournament appearances and achievements.

Kultida was not just there for emotional support; she played practical roles by escorting Tiger to tournaments and cheering him from the sidelines as he achieved greatness. The image of her embracing him after his victories captured the essence of their bond, especially during pivotal moments, like when he became the youngest PGA Tour winner or claimed his first Masters title in 1997.

Perhaps one of her most lasting impacts on Tiger's career is the tradition of wearing red on Sundays, which she encouraged him to adopt early on, believing it symbolized power as well as her son’s Capricorn zodiac sign. This practice has become iconic and is still associated with Tiger’s final rounds, underlining the deep connection of tradition and family legacy.

At the 2024 Bob Jones Award ceremony, Woods paid tribute to his mother, expressing, "This award, I accept it... for my mommy, too. She allowed me to get here. She allowed me to do these things, chase my dreams and the support and love – I didn’t do this alone. I had the greatest rock... my mom. Thank you, Mommy.”

Even with Earl's passing from cancer back in 2006, Kultida remained Tiger's steadfast companion, refusing to relinquish the role of his closest supporter. Through the turmoil of injuries, personal tragedies, and career ups and downs, Kultida was always present, reminding Tiger of the importance of perseverance and hard work.

Woods has continually spoken of his mother's formidable personality and strict upbringing, stating, "If I ever crossed the boundaries she set, there were consequences." This discipline shaped him not just as an athlete, but as a man with relentless ambition.

Today, as the golf community mourns the passing of Kultida Woods, the heartfelt tributes from fans and fellow athletes pour forth, highlighting her significant influence not just on her son but on the sport as well. She is remembered for the way she raised her son, instilling the fierceness he needed to thrive, and the love he required to feel grounded.

Kultida leaves behind her beloved son and two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie, who themselves were always loved by their grandmother. Woods' concluding words on social media, "Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family. Love you Mom," reflect the deep loss felt by the Woods family and the indelible mark Kultida left on their lives.

Through times of joy and sorrow, she exemplified not just motherhood but the essence of unconditional support, deepening both her family’s resilience and their successes.
