Thunderstorm Area Approaches Hong Kong With Heavy Rain Forecast

The Hong Kong Observatory warns of severe weather conditions as a rainstorm nears the region, urging residents to stay alert.

The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a weather warning as a thunderstorm area approaches the region, predicting heavy rainfall in some areas over the next two to three hours. The advisory was updated at 8:45 AM on May 7, 2025, indicating that the rainstorm, located in the Pearl River Estuary, is expected to bring significant precipitation.

Earlier, at 6:27 AM, the Observatory had already alerted residents about the ongoing development of thunderstorms due to a low-pressure trough affecting the area. The advisory encouraged citizens to stay vigilant as the weather conditions are expected to change rapidly.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, the forecast for the day includes mostly cloudy skies with a few showers. Initially, some regions are likely to experience thunderstorms, making the atmosphere feel hot and humid. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 31 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels soaring to 95%. A light to gentle easterly wind is also anticipated.

The Observatory has further predicted that the weather will remain hot and humid over the next couple of days, with sporadic sunny intervals and occasional showers. From Friday, May 9, 2025, to Saturday, May 10, 2025, the weather is expected to become increasingly unstable, leading to more frequent rain showers. This trend is likely to continue into Mother’s Day on May 11, 2025, when conditions will remain cloudy with potential thunderstorms.

In a broader context, the Observatory has noted that the low-pressure trough currently impacting Guangdong is expected to weaken, which will result in fewer showers in the coastal areas over the next two days. However, another low-pressure system will approach the South China coast by the weekend, bringing back unstable weather.

On April 15, 2025, the Observatory had issued its earliest hot weather warning, indicating a shift towards warmer temperatures. The forecast for the upcoming week suggests continued warm weather with a few showers expected from May 8, 2025, through to May 15, 2025.

Tomorrow, May 8, 2025, and Friday, May 9, 2025, are expected to be particularly hot with maximum temperatures of 31 and 32 degrees Celsius, respectively. Showers are anticipated to occur intermittently, particularly later in the day on Friday when thunderstorms may also develop.

As the weekend approaches, Saturday and Sunday (May 10 and 11, 2025) will see mostly cloudy weather with showers and thunderstorms, with temperatures peaking at 29 degrees on Saturday and dropping to 27 degrees on Sunday. Monday, May 12, 2025, will likely bring a couple of showers, with temperatures ranging between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead, Tuesday, May 13, 2025, is forecasted to have showers in certain areas, with maximum temperatures returning to around 30 degrees. The weather pattern will continue with a mix of hot days and occasional showers, particularly noted for Wednesday and Thursday of that week.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the weather conditions, especially with the potential for sudden changes in the forecast. The Hong Kong Observatory continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
