Thu Bon Police Find Elderly Woman After Long Search

After nearly 17 hours of coordinated efforts, local authorities and residents safely locate 86-year-old woman lost due to dementia in Da Nang

In a heartwarming display of community effort and determination, the police of Thu Bon commune in Da Nang City successfully located an elderly woman who had gone missing for nearly 17 hours. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bon, also known by her nicknames Bon Phao and Tin, was found safe and sound after an extensive search operation that mobilized local authorities, militia, and residents alike.

The ordeal began at 10 p.m. on July 12, 2025, when the Thu Bon Commune Police received an urgent report from Mrs. Bon's family. The 86-year-old woman, residing in Co Chau village, had wandered off and was unaccounted for, leaving her family and neighbors deeply concerned. Given her advanced age and the onset of dementia, the situation was particularly alarming.

Responding with swift action, the police quickly assembled a dedicated task force of 10 officers and soldiers, led by Lieutenant Colonel Truong Ho Ngoc Vu, the Deputy Head of the Thu Bon Commune Police. This team did not operate in isolation; they coordinated closely with local security forces, including the militia, self-defense units, community police, as well as local residents and Mrs. Bon’s family. Together, they formed a tightly knit search operation that extended well into the early hours of the next day.

Search efforts were concentrated in the dense and challenging terrain of the Vuon To area within Co Vinh group, part of Co Chau village. This area, characterized by its thick forest and uneven landscape, posed significant challenges for the searchers. Yet, the combined determination of the police and community members prevailed.

After nearly 17 hours of relentless searching, at approximately 3:15 p.m. on July 13, the team located Mrs. Bon. She was found in stable health, a relief to everyone involved. The initial investigation pointed to her advanced age and dementia as the primary reasons for her disorientation and subsequent wandering.

Once found, the police ensured Mrs. Bon’s safe return home, where she was promptly handed over to her family for care and support. The successful rescue highlighted not only the efficiency of the local police force but also the vital role of community cooperation in emergency situations.

Lieutenant Colonel Truong Ho Ngoc Vu personally led the operation, demonstrating commendable leadership throughout the search. The involvement of various community groups, including the militia and self-defense forces, underscored the collective spirit of Thu Bon commune in protecting its vulnerable citizens.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by elderly individuals with dementia, especially in rural or semi-rural settings where wandering can quickly lead to dangerous situations. It also shines a light on the importance of rapid response and coordinated action between law enforcement and local communities.

Residents of Co Chau village expressed their gratitude and relief following Mrs. Bon’s safe return. Many noted the tireless efforts of the police and volunteers, who braved the night and difficult terrain to bring her home. Their actions not only prevented a potential tragedy but also strengthened communal bonds.

Such cases are not uncommon, but the thoroughness and dedication exhibited during this search operation stand out. The police department’s quick mobilization and the community’s readiness to assist illustrate a model of effective crisis management that other regions might well emulate.

As the community reflects on this event, there is a renewed awareness of the vulnerabilities faced by the elderly and the necessity for vigilance, especially for those with cognitive impairments. The hope is that this successful rescue will inspire enhanced support systems and preventive measures to safeguard the well-being of aging populations in the future.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bon’s story, while stressful for her family and neighbors, ultimately ended with a positive outcome thanks to the concerted efforts of many. It is a testament to the power of community solidarity and the unwavering commitment of local authorities to protect and serve.
