Thrilling ISL Encounter Ends 2-2 Between Odisha And NorthEast

Alaaeddine Ajaraie's record brace not enough for NorthEast as both teams share points.

NorthEast United FC and Odisha FC played out a captivating 2-2 draw during their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 clash at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Monday. The match saw Alaaeddine Ajaraie score twice for the Highlanders, marking his 18th goal of the season, which equaled the record for the highest individual goals tally of any ISL season, previously held by Ferran Corominas and Bartholomew Ogbeche.

Despite Ajaraie's exceptional performance, the game reflected NEUFC’s struggles, as they have dropped 17 points this season from winning positions. The tension escalated after both teams displayed serious attempts to secure the win throughout the 90 minutes.

The first half was dominated by missed opportunities and stagnant scoring, with NEUFC's best chance occurring after the drinks break. A perfectly executed pass from Macarton Nickson sent Jithin MS sprinting down the right flank to cross for Nestor Albiach. Just as the Spaniard readied himself for the shot, Mourtada Fall made a spectacular tackle, preventing what appeared to be a sure goal.

Following the break, the intensity increased significantly. Both teams had their chances, but decisive finishing was lacking on numerous occasions. OFC’s Hugo Boumous and Isak Vanlalruatfela came close to breaking the deadlock, and NEUFC's Michel Zabaco and Nestor likewise squandered chances.

The deadlock was finally broken at the 67th minute when NEUFC's Redeem Tlang took the corner short and played it to Buanthanglun Samte. Samte delivered a stunning cross to Ajaraie at the far post, who made no mistake, notching his 17th goal of the season.

Odisha FC, determined to turn the game around, leveled the score just eleven minutes later. Thoiba Singh found the net, heading past NEUFC's goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh after receiving a perfect cross from Isak.

But with the clock winding down, Ajaraie put NEUFC back on top again with his second goal, this time from a header following a free-kick delivery from Nestor. His ability to evade defenders became evident once again as he flawlessly connected with the set piece.

It appeared NEUFC might snatch victory, but as time ticked away, OFC mounted one final assault. The drama unfolded during injury time (90+3’) when Isak and Diego Mauricio executed a brilliant play, culminating with Isak slipping the ball past Gurmeet, snatching back the equalizer.

The game culminated with both teams sharing the spoils, as the thrilling back-and-forth highlighted the resilience of Odisha FC, who managed to overcome significant pressure and guarantee themselves at least one point from the match.

After this draw, Odisha FC will look to build on their momentum as they prepare to face FC Goa away from home on February 6, whereas NorthEast United FC will return to action on February 7, hosting Mumbai City FC in Shillong.

A thrilling encounter at the Kalinga Stadium not only entertained fans but also underlined the competitive spirit of the ISL, with both clubs showcasing their determination and quality on the pitch.
