Three Florida Deputies Die After Traffic Collision

Community mourns loss as deputies struck by SUV during traffic enforcement

Once again, tragedy has struck the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, as three of its dedicated members, part of the motorcycle unit, were involved in a devastating traffic accident. On the morning of November 21, 2024, the community was shaken when Cpl. Luis Paez, Deputy Ralph Waller, and Deputy Ignacio Diaz were struck by an SUV on Southern Boulevard. This incident, which has left many searching for answers and struggling to cope, unfolded as the deputies were conducting routine traffic enforcement, checking for speeding vehicles on State Road 80.

According to Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the deputies were engaged with one of their motorcycles, waiting for assistance after it stalled. The deputies had safely maneuvered the disabled motorcycle off the road onto the grassy shoulder, and were preparing for another sheriff’s deputy to arrive with jumper cables. Tragically, their moment of preparation turned fatal when the driver of the SUV, unable to control their vehicle, swerved off the roadway and struck them.

Witnesses recounted the harrowing scene, stating they saw the SUV veering from the center lane. The driver, reportedly attempting to avoid hitting another vehicle which had slowed unexpectedly, overcompensated, leading to the collision. This unexpected turn of events saw the deputies thrown from the impact, leaving them seriously injured on the scene.

Within moments, emergency services were on the scene, and the injured deputies were rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center. Despite the immediate attention, two deputies -- Cpl. Paez, aged 58, and Deputy Waller, aged 54 -- succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival. Deputy Diaz, aged 51, remained critically injured until news broke on November 25, 2024, confirming he had also passed away.

This series of tragic losses has left the Palm Beach County law enforcement community grappling with grief. John Kazanjian, the president of the Palm Beach County Police Benevolent Association, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “It’s just devastating. The P.B.S.O. organization as a whole has really taken a big blow,” he stated. The enormity of the loss has prompted plans for community memorials, with gatherings to honor all three deputies scheduled for December 3 at the iThink Financial Amphitheater.

The events leading to this tragedy mark another dark moment for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Over the years, the agency has mourned the loss of eight deputies struck by vehicles during duty, with the last incident occurring on November 28, 2007. This crash led to the deaths of deputies Donta Manuel and Jonathan Wallace, who were serving to protect the public during a traffic stop.

During this period, conflicting emotions swirl among those left behind. Sheriff Bradshaw returned to South Florida feeling the weight of the tragedy firsthand, having visited the families of the fallen deputies. “They never saw it coming,” he reflected, emphasizing the suddenness of the incident as the deputies were simply going about their day, doing their jobs.

The Florida Highway Patrol is currently conducting the investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. A spokesperson confirmed they anticipate needing approximately 90 to 120 days to complete their findings. The driver involved is reportedly cooperating with authorities, but information on potential charges remains unclear.

While this tragedy brings to light the dangers faced daily by law enforcement officers, it’s also sparked heartfelt tributes from across the community and beyond. The U.S. Honor Flag, known for its role during recovery efforts at Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks, is set to be flown across the South Florida region as part of the commemoration for the devoted deputies.

The community has rallied to support the families left behind, demonstrating resilience amid sorrow. Organizers are urging residents to join the memorial on December 3, with plans for tributes, moments of silence, and opportunities for the public to express their condolences. For many, it’s not just about mourning; it’s about honoring the lives of those who served and protecting their memory.

The emotional impact of this accident cannot be overstated. Families, colleagues, and friends are coming together, reinforcing their bonds as they prepare to pay tribute to these dedicated officers at the memorialservice. This loss resonates far beyond the immediate community, with police organizations throughout the country extending their sympathies and respect.

Deputy Ignacio Diaz, joining the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office in 2004, served on the motorcycle unit for ten years. Similarly, Cpl. Luis Paez dedicated 36 years to the department, and Deputy Ralph Waller served for 18 years, establishing long histories of service and dedication to public safety. Their commitment to duty shines brightly, and the grief felt by the community reflects the indelible marks they left behind.

Those wanting to participate or offer their support to the families faced with this unimaginable loss can find information on local news platforms and community bulletins. Mutual aid has been offered by various law enforcement agencies, and public accounts on sites like GoFundMe are surfacing to assist families financially during this difficult time.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the tragedy has served as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who serve on the front lines. Yet, amid grief, there’s also resilience, kindness, and unity among the ranks of law enforcement and the community as they stand together to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s not just about memorializing their lives; it’s about ensuring their legacies live on through the continued service and dedication of all who wear the badge.

The impact of this tragic event will undoubtedly be felt for years to come, with the community grappling with loss and change. Grieving personnel within the sheriff’s office, along with their families, face the difficult task of moving forward without their loved ones, who represented the epitome of dedication to public safety. Their service reminds the people of Palm Beach County of the unpredictable nature of life and the sacrifices made daily by those who protect and serve.
