Seoul welcomes 40,000 participants to celebrate health and community spirit.

On March 16, 2025, the streets of Seoul bustled with excitement as the annual '2025 Seoul Marathon' took place, attracting participants from around the world. Hosted by the city of Seoul, the event began at Gwanghwamun Plaza and concluded at the Jamsil Sports Complex. The marathon is renowned for being the only domestic event recognized with the Platinum Label by World Athletics, marking it as one of the premier marathon events globally.

This year's marathon saw approximately 40,000 participants from 66 countries, with competitors divided between the elite section and the more accessible masters section. The elite race featured 170 runners from seven nations, including celebrated athlete Jemal Yimer Mekonnen, who had previously won the 2024 Seoul Marathon.

Accompanying the event was Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who joined the participants at the starting point to cheer them on. "We are working hard to create a city where citizens can walk and run more," he stated, highlighting the city’s initiatives aimed at promoting health and wellness among its residents. He emphasized the importance of programs like the 'Runner Station' and 'Fit Station', which cater to the well-being of approximately 1.92 million residents.

For the smooth running of the marathon, significant traffic controls were implemented. Vehicles were restricted throughout various sections of the city to minimize disruptions during the marathon. The Sejong-daero section, which served as the commencement point for the full marathon course, was closed to traffic from 5:30 AM to 9:00 AM. Other key roads, including Euljiro, Cheonggyecheon-ro, and Jongno, faced closures from 7:50 AM until 11:11 AM, complicate access for commuters.

The police deployed 1,651 personnel to manage the situation effectively. Their aim was to reduce disruption and facilitate the safe passage of participants and onlookers alike. The Seoul city authorities also adjusted bus routes within the controlled areas to mitigate any transit hitches caused by the marathon.

An enthusiastic crowd and participants filled the air with excitement and camaraderie, making it more than just a race; it transformed the busy cityscape of Seoul. Among the 40,000 participants, runners enjoyed the vibrant environment, fueled by various events around the marathon.

One notable sponsorship came from Hite Jinro's 'Terra Light', which partnered as the official sponsor of the marathon. Operating experience zones and photo opportunities at the Jamsil Sports Complex, the brand aimed to connect more deeply with consumers and boost its recognition as the leading light beer. They creatively integrated elements like branded merchandise and prize giveaways, contributing to local commerce.

The marathon was not solely focused on competing; it promoted health and communal engagement. Mayor Oh expressed his commitment to fostering environments where citizens could maintain their health either through recreational activities or participation in organized events. His remarks underscored the city's overarching goal of encouraging more productive lifestyles among residents.

This event was symbolic of the city's vibrant culture, actively bridging community and health through athleticism. Participants and spectators alike enjoyed not just the race but the atmosphere created by the city's commitment to integrating sports as part of everyday life.

Despite the traffic disruptions, citizens were encouraged to utilize public transport during the marathon. Organizers urged residents to navigate their commute with careful planning and timing due to the anticipated congestion caused by the large influx of attendees and road closures.

With thousands of runners crossing the finish line, this marathon demonstrated the resilience and spirited community of Seoul, showcasing its dedication to preserving healthy lifestyles through sports. The 2025 Seoul Marathon, with its impressive turnout and well-executed operational controls, was deemed not just a local event but a global celebration of fitness and community.

Each year, the anticipation for the marathon builds, reflecting how the city views such events as catalysts for promoting dynamism within urban spaces, fostering health consciousness, and cultivating international camaraderie through shared experiences.
