Thousands Gather For World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade

Hot Springs parade attracts celebrities and 30,000 spectators to its 98-foot route.

Thousands of spectators lined the streets of Hot Springs, Arkansas, for the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17, 2025. With its unique 98-foot (30-meter) route, the parade stands out from iconic celebrations held elsewhere, like those in New York and Chicago, which boast large crowds and substantial floats, as it marks over two decades of quirky tradition.

The event began back in 2003, when Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs, and his friends enjoyed some drinks at a downtown restaurant and pondered why they didn’t have their own parade. One year later, they launched the first parade, attracting around 1,500 enthusiastic participants. Today, the parade draws more than 30,000 attendees annually, firmly establishing itself as one of the major events for Hot Springs.

The parade features 40 different floats filled with creativity and humor. One of the highlights is the participation of the International Order of the Marching Irish Elvi, which includes about 100 Elvis Presley impersonators. Another colorful float pays homage to the local chapter of the International Society of Helen Ropers, with participants dressing up as characters from the beloved 1970s sitcom “Three’s Company.”

Valerie Bertinelli, the renowned actress, served as the grand marshal this year, bringing additional star power to the event. Rap icon Flavor Flav, known for his flamboyant style and energetic presence, was the official starter, aptly reflecting the event’s fun-loving spirit. Prior to leading the parade, he expressed his delight, saying, "I can have fun in a five-foot parade. Ninety-eight feet gives me a little bit more time to have more fun." A unique green version of Flav’s signature clock necklace was even created for the occasion, underscoring the creativity of the organizers.

The hotly anticipated Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders have also become parade fixtures, enhancing the event's festive atmosphere. They distributed beads to eager spectators from their cars, adding to the celebration. The parade is not just about the floats; it also includes lively activities such as concerts and the regular “Blarney Stone kissing contest,” reaffirming the destination's festive nature.

Before the parade kicks off, there’s even more excitement as organizers ceremonially measure the route, emphasizing the playful nature of the celebration. The Hot Springs parade has faced competition and playful rivalries with other short parades across the country. For example, bemused spectators might hear of the 78-pace parade planned for the same day in Bemidji, Minnesota. Another competitor, Adamsville, Rhode Island, claims its 89-foot route as the shortest; though, Hot Springs claims supremacy with the title “World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” secured by copyright.

Despite its tiny dimension, Hot Springs' event is massive on spirit and engagement. Chuck Last, visiting from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, noted the appeal of the event compared to larger parades, saying, “I’ve been to Chicago, I’ve been to Savannah, Georgia. I like this one more than any of them.” This sentiment reflects the parade's unique charm, which prioritizes fun over size.

This year's festivities kicked off under sunny skies, with participants clearly excited to partake in the micro-parade's whimsical entries. Among the participating groups, the cheerleaders and entertainment thrilled the crowd, as echoing cheers and laughter filled the streets. The delightful mix of celebrity and local eccentricity have cemented the Hot Springs St. Patrick’s Day Parade as more than just another civic event—it has transformed it over the years to become something remarkably entertaining and unique.

The parade's quirky roots and insistence on fun over formality stand as testaments to the town's character. Each year, it proves simpler can be richer when it brings together communities and visitors alike to share laughter and joy. This playful tradition will no doubt continue to grow as it's not just about the parade being the shortest; it’s about bringing people together and celebrating.

With official recognition and awe-inspiring celebrity participation, the Hot Springs event exemplifies community spirit. Local leaders like Steve Arrison remain dedicated to keeping the charm and tradition alive, ensuring future generations can enjoy this spirited celebration. For everyone involved—spectators, participants, and even the grand marshal—the event remains cherished and loved, proving size isn’t everything when it’s all about making memories.
