HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — On March 17, 2025, thousands gathered for the 22nd Annual World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which took place along the 98-foot route in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This unique and joyous event stands out not only for its incredible brevity but also for its lively atmosphere and celebrity participation.
Over the years, Hot Springs has transformed this quirky celebration from its humble origins to become one of the biggest attractions of the year, drawing over 30,000 spectators annually. Initially held back in 2004 with just about 1,500 attendees, the parade has continued to grow, appealing to both locals and visitors alike. Even Steve Arrison, the CEO of Visit Hot Springs, cited it as one of the city’s primary draws, highlighting his excitement about its progress.
“We got to talking and said, well, why don’t we have a parade?” Arrison recalled, recounting how the inaugural event was inspired during discussions among friends at a downtown restaurant. The idea quickly gained momentum, and the following year, the first parade was organized.
This year’s parade featured not just the 40 creative floats but also 100 members of the International Order of the Marching Irish Elvi, blending fun with creativity. The event even included participants dressed as characters from the sitcom “Three’s Company,” representing the International Society of Helen Ropers. Such memorable depictions ensured the audience’s enjoyment as they soaked up the festive atmosphere.
Grand Marshal Valerie Bertinelli fancied her role, confidently stating, “We’re not doing small stuff here. This is big.” Alongside her was the celebrated flavor icon, Flavor Flav, who whimsically danced through the crowd, expressing, “I can have fun in a five-foot parade. Ninety-eight feet gives me a little bit more time to have more fun.” Flav even sported his iconic oversized clock necklace, adapted for the day with festive green hues.
The enthusiastic Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders participated too, tossing beads to the jubilant crowds, showcasing the mixture of sports and St. Patrick’s Day excitement. The parade’s agenda included various related events, particularly the Blarney Stone kissing contest. Attendees eagerly participated, marking the playful spirit of the day.
Interestingly, the Guinness Book of World Records does not officially recognize the title of the shortest parade, leading to lighthearted rivalries. Notably, Arrison referenced other parades across the country attempting to claim the title. For example, two cities in New York have recently engaged in friendly competition, each claiming to host the world's shortest parade. One parade planned for Bemidji, Minnesota, featuring 78 paces, aimed to send shockwaves through the established norms of traditional celebrations. Yet, even as they all attempt to eclipse Hot Springs, Arrison insists, “They can’t hold the title because we’ve copyrighted it.”
A unique aspect of this year’s parade was the official measuring of the route, performed ceremoniously before the event kicked off. A bugler from Oaklawn, the nearby horse track and casino, marked the official start of the festivities, welcoming onlookers to the lively occasion.
Not to be outdone, festivals across the country also celebrated the spirit of St. Patrick's Day the day before the Hot Springs event. The St. Patrick’s Day parade held on March 16, 2025, attracted enthusiastic participants elsewhere, such as Kingston, New York, which celebrated its own parade. The same time, Worcester, Massachusetts, honored local traditions, with memories of its participants—such as the author who fondly remembered her past experiences at the 371 Club—resonated deeply.
Many individuals share similar sentiments toward St. Patrick's Day. For example, crowds returned to reminisce about earlier parades and cherished traditions. The love for the festive occasion sparks enthusiasm across regions, and these gatherings often stir sentiments of nostalgia and community among the participants.
Despite being only 98 feet long, the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade has proven to embody the essence of the celebration—laughter, cheer, and shared experiences. The distinctive nature of the event coupled with impressive participation ensures attendees will continue to support the effort, keeping the tradition alive.
If one thing is for certain, it’s the spirit of Hot Springs will continue to thrive as they celebrate the quirkiest parade of them all. With laughter, merriment, and community, the event highlights the beauty of distinct traditions spanning both time and place.
