Thomas Rühmann: Evolving From TV Star To Family Man

The beloved actor embraces life beyond the screen, blending theater, music, and family.

Thomas Rühmann, one of the most recognizable faces on German television, has captivated audiences since 1998 with his portrayal of Dr. Roland Heilmann on the ARD series 'In aller Freundschaft'. While millions know him as the beloved doctor from the Sachsenklinik, there's much more to Rühmann's story, including his rich personal life filled with family, music, and theater.

Born on May 11, 1955, in Osterburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Rühmann grew up in a large family with one brother and five sisters. This vibrant household sparked his early interest in acting. After completing his Abitur, he pursued his passion at the prestigious Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art in Berlin. His career began on the stage, where he performed at the renowned Maxim Gorki Theater, before making his on-screen debut as Martin Luther in 1983.

Rühmann's breakthrough came with 'In aller Freundschaft', which features his character, Dr. Roland Heilmann, who has weathered numerous dramatic storylines, including surviving a plane crash, losing his wife Pia to leukemia, and finding love again with colleague Dr. Kathrin Globisch, played by Andrea Kathrin Loewig. His character has become a staple of German television, with Rühmann himself humorously noting, "I would not go for a beer with him," reflecting his personal disconnection from the character's more disciplined traits.

Beyond the screen, Rühmann has woven his passion for theater deeply throughout his life. Since 1998, he has co-operated 'Theater am Rand', located in the picturesque eastern Oderbruch region. This intimate venue has become known for its unique atmosphere, attracting visitors from across Germany. Along with co-founder Tobias Morgenstern, Rühmann built this haven for storytelling, focusing on quiet, human narratives rather than grand theatrical productions. He now runs the theater solo since 2023. A distinctive feature of this theater is its pay-what-you-wish model, allowing audiences to appreciate the performances on their own terms, exemplifying Rühmann's belief in the community's connection to the arts.

Music also plays a central role in Rühmann's life. He is not only skilled at guitar but has also built a musical career alongside his brother, Martin Rühmann, releasing several albums. Their performances showcase Rühmann's multifaceted talent, affirming he is not just the beloved TV doctor but also a passionate musician.

On the home front, Rühmann is committed to family. He is married for the second time and is the father of three children and grandfather to two grandchildren. He shares his life with his current wife and their young son, Jannes, who is celebrated for his dance achievements, recently winning first place at the World Dance Contest in Venlo, Netherlands. Rühmann’s daughters from his first marriage continue to be integral parts of his life, showcasing his dedication as both a father and grandfather.

Throughout his career and personal life, Rühmann demonstrates the ability to balance popularity with authenticity. He once stated, "Fröhlich, bitter, zart, kräftig, leise, lautstark, immer absichtsvoll, immer spielerisch," which describes the essence of the stories told at 'Theater am Rand', blending joy and intensity, much like his own life.

Thomas Rühmann is undeniably more than just the Dr. Heilmann viewers adore; he embodies creativity, passion, and familial love through various creative expressions, enriching both his and his audience's lives. His commitment to the arts, along with his family values, makes him quite the extraordinary figure, showing the world what it means to be truly multifaceted.
