OLÍMPIA, SP - After enduring the adverse effects of one of the most severe storms to hit the region, the Thermas dos Laranjais water park is set to reopen its gates on Monday, December 23, 2024. Known as the largest water park in Latin America, Thermas was forced to temporarily close after rainfalls exceeding 130 millimeters fell within just two hours on December 21, prompting significant flooding.
Following the intense weather, park staff mobilized, comprising nearly 90% of the workforce, to tackle the massive cleanup effort. Led by President Jorge Noronha and General Manager Débora Vicente, hundreds worked overnight, showcasing their dedication and resilience. "This was the first time, apart from the pandemic, in our 40-year history, where the park needed to be closed for more than 24 hours for repairs and maintenance. Such measures were necessary to guarantee the safety of both visitors and staff," Noronha explained.
The storm resulted in extensive flooding across multiple areas of the park, including the parking lot and several attractions, such as the wave pool, where images showed chairs and tables submerged under water. Fortunately, the animals at the park’s mini-farm remained unaffected. Many vehicles were left partially submerged, adding to the devastation caused by the storm.
The response from local figures has been commendable as well. Roberto de Lucena, the Secretary of Tourism for the State of São Paulo, expressed his solidarity, stating, "I have learned about the intense rains affecting Olímpia and the park. I want to offer my support on behalf of myself and Governor Tarcísio de Freitas. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help." This gesture underscored the cooperative spirit during challenging times.
Looking forward, the park's reopening will see approximately 80% of its attractions operational. Among the rides, the Crazy and Caracol water slides, the Hydro Bounce, the Floating Pool, and the Water Roller Coaster will remain closed temporarily. Despite these setbacks, the management is committed to maintaining the high standards of safety and enjoyment.
Reflecting on the efforts made, Jorge Noronha remarked, "Moments like this show the team spirit and strength of our workforce. It is moving to see our employees working side by side with determination to prepare the park to welcome back our guests as quickly as possible. This unity is what helps us overcome challenges and continue to grow." With such committed leadership, the Thermas dos Laranjais demonstrates its resilience and dedication to the community of Olímpia and its visitors.
For visitors who had tickets for December 22 and 23, the park has arranged options for rescheduling their visits. Information can be obtained directly from sales points or by email at [email protected]. The park advises potential visitors to check their official website or Instagram account for the latest updates, ensuring you get all the necessary information.
Despite the challenges posed by the weather, Thermas dos Laranjais stands ready to reclaim its status as one of Brazil’s premier destinations for aquatic fun, evidencing the spirit of resilience and unity among the staff and community.
