Theodore Tugboat Replica Partially Sinks In St. Catharines Dock

Owner Blair McKeil confirms the iconic vessel took on water, prompting efforts for refloat.

The life-size replica of Theodore Tugboat, affectionately known as Theodore Too, has partially sunk at its dock in St. Catharines, Ontario, prompting concerns and efforts to refloat the beloved vessel.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night when the iconic boat took on water and became mostly submerged beside the dock at the Ontario Shipyard in Port Weller. According to the owner's statement, Blair McKeil, no injuries were reported during the incident.

The cause of the sinking remains unclear, with McKeil, who is also the CEO of Breakwater Financial, emphasizing the importance of executing safe and effective measures to get Theodore Too back afloat. “At this time, the cause of this unfortunate incident remains unclear,” McKeil noted, adding, “We are committed to executing a safe and successful refloat of our beloved Theodore TOO.”

A social media update from Theodore's official accounts expressed the situation with light-hearted humor: “I am resting safely on my belly in the mud and [a team of experts] are working super hard to have me ship shape in time for the holidays.”

Theodore Too has been part of Newfoundland and Labrador's heritage since its launch from Dayspring, Nova Scotia, back in 2000. It's modeled after the titular character from the popular CBC children's television series, which aired from 1993 to 2001. For over 21 years, the vessel served as both a cherished part of Halifax Harbour and later, as part of its adventures around Ontario.

Since its relocation to Ontario, Theodore Too has made over 20 stops at various ports along the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, promoting marine industry initiatives and water conservation efforts. At one point, it even opened its doors as an Airbnb for patrons seeking unique experiences on the water.

Reactions to the news of the sinking have poured in from public and government figures. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston expressed his sentiments through social media, stating, “Theodore is a true Nova Scotia icon. It’s sad to see our old friend in such a damaged state. Stay strong, Theodore!” His words reflect the public's affection for the iconic tugboat and how it has touched the hearts of many since its inception.

Meanwhile, McKeil reassured the community and fans alike about the commitment to mitigate any environmental impact caused by the incident. “We have taken measures to mitigate any potential environmental impact,” he stated, reinforcing the owner’s sense of responsibility for the vessel’s legacy.

The effects of the sinking have also raised concerns among local residents and marine enthusiasts who have followed Theodore Too's beloved status and community initiatives over the years. The boat has not only been integral to entertainment but served educational purposes, championing causes dear to residents of both Nova Scotia and Ontario.

Theodore Too is more than just metal and paint; it symbolizes memories for children who grew up watching the show, echoing themes of teamwork and friendship. Its presence has ignited nostalgia for many, making the response to this unfortunate incident even more pronounced.

Efforts are underway for the refloat, with expert teams mobilizing to address the issue. For many, the hope is to see Theodore Too restored, rejuvenated, and once again sailing on the waters of Ontario or returning to its roots back on the Atlantic coastline.

Details on the specific timeline for refloating the vessel or the full extent of damages incurred have yet to be released. The community remains watchful and eager for updates as this beloved piece of maritime history awaits its resurgence.

This story resonates not just as news, but as part of the greater narrative of collective identity tied to maritime culture and the cherished childhood memories tied to Theodore Tugboat.
