The Voice Of Holland Returns With New Safety Measures

After past controversies, the talent show aims to ensure participant safety with strict protocols and new coaches.

The popular Dutch talent show, The Voice of Holland, is set to return to television in January 2026, following a significant overhaul aimed at ensuring the safety of its participants. This comeback comes after the program faced serious allegations of sexual misconduct that led to its suspension three years ago.

RTL, the broadcaster behind the show, announced on March 31, 2025, that The Voice of Holland will be back with new safety protocols and a fresh lineup of coaches. The return is designed not only to revive the beloved format but also to restore public trust after the controversies that plagued its previous seasons.

In the wake of the scandal, which was brought to light by the online program BOOS, hosted by Tim Hofman, the producers have implemented strict measures to prevent any form of inappropriate behavior. Former participants had accused coaches Marco Borsato and Ali B, along with bandleader Jeroen Rietbergen, of sexual misconduct, prompting RTL to halt production midway through the season.

Two years ago, an investigation commissioned by ITV, the production company, confirmed instances of inappropriate behavior, leading to an apology from ITV for not taking adequate measures to address the issues promptly. Ali B was sentenced to two years in prison for rape and attempted rape, while the case against Rietbergen was dismissed due to insufficient evidence. Borsato, though not prosecuted, is still under investigation for separate allegations involving a minor.

To combat power imbalances and ensure a safe environment for contestants, the makers of The Voice have developed a new protocol. Key changes include ensuring that no candidate will ever be alone with a coach or staff member. All online interactions will be monitored through a special app designed to prevent private communications. Additionally, special supervisors will be present to assist candidates throughout the process, from intake interviews to rehearsals. Extra confidential advisors will also be appointed to provide support.

The upcoming season will be presented by Chantal Janzen and Edson da Graça, with Janzen returning after years of hosting the show. Edson da Graça steps in for Martijn Krabbé, who has been associated with the show since its inception in 2010 but is unable to continue due to a terminal illness. The children's version, The Voice Kids, will also return, with Jamai Loman and Quinty Misiedjan as hosts.

The new coaching lineup for The Voice of Holland includes Ilse DeLange, who is the only returning coach, along with newcomers Willie Wartaal, Dinand Woesthoff, and the duo Suzan and Freek. For The Voice Kids, DeLange will again take on a coaching role alongside Claude, Flemming, and Emma Heesters.

Peter van der Vorst, program director at RTL, expressed excitement about the return of The Voice, stating, "The Voice is a strong format that started worldwide at RTL 4. I am proud that we can offer all the talent that the Netherlands has this unique platform again." He emphasized the extensive efforts made to ensure the program's safe return, highlighting that both content quality and process integrity have been prioritized.

Laurens Woldberg, Managing Director of ITV Studios Netherlands, echoed these sentiments, noting that the organization has worked hard to improve its culture and processes over the past few years. He stated, "We do not forget the past, but we take everything we have learned with us to ensure a safe working environment for everyone involved in our programs."

With the announcement of the return of The Voice of Holland and The Voice Kids, talents can now register for both shows via the RTL website. This includes individuals who had previously auditioned for the 2022 season that was not fully aired.

As the countdown to January 2026 begins, fans of the show are eager to see how the new format and safety measures will play out, hoping that the changes will lead to a more positive and respectful environment for all participants. The return of The Voice marks a significant moment in Dutch television, as it seeks to reclaim its place in the hearts of viewers while ensuring a commitment to safety and integrity.
