The Onion Snags Infowars Amid Legal Chaos

The satirical outlet steps up to purchase Jones' platform with support from Sandy Hook families

Alex Jones, known for his provocative and often controversial presence on his internet show, _Infowars_, has been embroiled in significant legal troubles, particularly following his contentious statements about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting back in 2012. The tragedy, which led to the deaths of six staff members and six children, was met with skepticism from Jones. His questioning and conspiracy rhetoric surrounding the event incited harassment against grieving families by his followers, intensifying the backlash against him.

This outlandish behavior has resulted in two major lawsuits against both Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, which runs _Infowars_ and its associated online store. These legal battles have dragged on for years, with Jones's team repeatedly accused of obstructing justice by failing to share necessary documents during the discovery phase. Eventually, due to these actions, Jones was found liable by default, meaning he was already deemed guilty, and the focus shifted to determining the financial compensation owed to the families, which eventually exceeded $1.5 billion.

Attempting to protect his financial interests, Jones declared bankruptcy, but this decision backfired. A federal bankruptcy court ruled against his efforts, stating his bankruptcy would not shield him from the obligations owed to the Sandy Hook families. Subsequently, as part of the bankruptcy proceedings, everything under Free Speech Systems was put up for auction.

Here’s where it gets interesting: the satirical news outlet, _The Onion_, stepped up to acquire _Infowars_ at the auction, aided by the families affected by the Sandy Hook tragedy. Their goal was to prevent the dismantling of _Infowars_ piece by piece and to take it over as a whole. The plan involves shutting down the site as is and redirecting its resources to feature familiar internet humorists and content creators.

Ben Collins, CEO of _The Onion_, expressed their ambitions boldly: “_The Onion_ is proud to acquire _Infowars_, and we look forward to continuing its storied tradition of scaring the site’s users with lies until they fork over their cold, hard cash, or Bitcoin. We will also accept Bitcoin.” This tongue-in-cheek statement encapsulates the blending of satire with the serious nature of their acquiring such a controversial platform.

Despite the potential for transformation, the acquisition hasn’t been smooth sailing. Jones, along with his legal team, has labeled the auction process as “rigged” and “biased.” They are now reportedly collaborating with attorneys from X Corp., the new entity set up by Elon Musk to manage Twitter, to pursue additional legal avenues and drag out the proceedings if necessary.

Adding another layer to the drama, the judge overseeing the case has ordered a new hearing to address transparency concerns over the _Infowars_ acquisition. This hearing is set for the upcoming week, raising questions about how this whole saga will resolve.

The _Infowars_ saga may have shifted from conspiracy theories and bombastic rhetoric to legal maneuverings over ownership and legacy, but as the story evolves, so too does the potential for humor and satire to emerge from it, courtesy of _The Onion_. At this stage, it remains to be seen how the situation will play out. Will Jones find legal ways to impede the acquisition? And what fresh takes on current events might emerge under the new tenure of _The Onion_? One thing is for certain: this unexpected twist has the makings of both tragedy and comedy, highlighting the complicated interplay of media, money, and morality.
