The New Pornographers Drummer Arrested For Child Pornography

Joseph Seiders faces multiple charges following incidents at a Palm Desert restaurant

Joseph Seiders, the drummer for the Canadian indie rock band The New Pornographers, has been arrested on multiple charges related to child pornography following two alarming incidents at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Palm Desert, California. The events, which have shocked fans and band members alike, involved an 11-year-old boy and have raised serious concerns about the safety of minors in public spaces.

On April 7, 2025, deputies of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding a suspicious circumstance at the restaurant. An 11-year-old boy reported that a man, later identified as Seiders, recorded him on a cellphone while he was using the restroom. This incident prompted further investigation, leading to a second report on April 9, when an employee informed authorities that the same man was seen entering and exiting the restroom with minors.

Seiders, 44, was apprehended later that day. Following his arrest, the Sheriff’s Office executed search warrants for his residence, vehicle, and cellphone. The searches allegedly uncovered additional evidence implicating him in the reported incidents, including child pornography. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities believing there may be more victims.

Seiders has been charged with a series of serious offenses, including possession of a minor in a sexual act, annoying or molesting a child, concealing a camera with intent to invade privacy, and attempting to conceal a camera without consent. He is currently being held at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio, with bail set at $1 million.

In a statement released by The New Pornographers, the band expressed their horror and devastation at the news. “Everyone in the band is absolutely shocked, horrified, and devastated by the news of the charges against Joe Seiders—and we have immediately severed all ties with him. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted by his actions,” they stated. This swift decision underscores the band's commitment to upholding a safe and respectful environment for their fans and community.

Seiders joined The New Pornographers in 2014, replacing longtime drummer Kurt Dahle. He contributed to several of the band's albums, including 2017’s Whiteout Conditions and 2019’s In the Morse Code of Brake Lights. The band had recently released a new single, “Ballad of the Last Payphone,” just days before the first reported incident.

As the community grapples with the implications of these events, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with additional information to come forward. Investigator Iniguez can be reached at 760-836-1600, while Riverside Sheriff’s Dispatch is available at 951-776-1099.

The upcoming court date for Seiders is set for April 22, 2025, where he will face the charges leveled against him. The severity of the allegations has cast a long shadow over The New Pornographers and raised important discussions about the responsibilities of public figures and the protection of children in society.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical need for vigilance in safeguarding the welfare of minors, particularly in public spaces where they should feel safe. As the investigation continues, many will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds and what measures will be taken to ensure justice is served.

In a world where trust is paramount, incidents like this shake the very foundation of community safety and highlight the ongoing battle against child exploitation. The New Pornographers, once a beloved band known for their upbeat melodies and engaging performances, now find themselves at the center of a deeply troubling narrative that could have lasting repercussions for all involved.

As the legal proceedings progress, the focus will undoubtedly remain on the victims and the broader implications of such actions in the music industry and beyond. It is a stark reminder that the actions of individuals can reverberate through their communities, affecting countless lives.
