The Future Of The Rig: Will There Be A Third Season?

After thrilling viewers with its second season, the fate of The Rig hangs in the balance as fans hope for more supernatural mysteries.

This week, the chilling tales of The Rig continue as Prime Video launches the latest season, bringing fresh mysteries to subscribers. With all six gripping episodes now available for streaming, the crew of the Kinloch Bravo dives back deep, facing not just the ocean's depths but the eerie aftermath of supernatural discoveries.

Following the breathtaking conclusion of season one, character arcs evolve as Rose Mason (Emily Hampshire), Magnus MacMillan (Iain Glen), and Fulmer Hamilton (Martin Compston) are airlifted from the wreckage of their Scottish oil rig. Now under the leadership of the duplicitous David Coake (Mark Addy), the investigation shifts to the Stac, a secretive facility concealed within the icy expanse of the Arctic Circle.

The synopsis tantalizingly teases, “Here, the trapped crew must deal with the emotional and physical fallout of the devastating tsunami, navigate swirling conspiracies, and confront new threats lurking from the depths of the ocean,” as reported by the Daily Record.

Season two doesn’t hold back on drama, promising engaging set pieces and emotional confrontations as the crew grapples with its new, perilous environment. Yet, fans are left wondering: will The Rig return for a third season? Although the finale’s details remain closely guarded, there's speculation it could leave several cliffhangers ripe for exploration.

During press interactions with Screen Time, cast members expressed their enthusiasm for returning. Rochenda Sandall, who plays Cat Braithwaite, couldn't contain her excitement, stating, “We’d always like to come back!” Iain Glen echoed her sentiments, adding, “We would love to come back. The fact is it’ll go and hopefully people love it as much as they did the first season, and if they do, I think we’ll be back for a third.”

Emily Hampshire also offered candid insights, highlighting the fierce competition among television shows: “It is all dependent on... What’s hard now is there’s so much television so it doesn’t even matter how great it is, because it actually is really great. But, people have to find it and they have to be motivated to watch it.”

While the prospect of season three hangs delicately, Glen suggests the warm reception to the initial episodes should bode well for the show’s continuity. “If you start watching it, I don’t think you can leave it,” he noted. “They call these things 'completion rates' when people start watching it, and that's what happened with The Rig [season] one.”

Praising the show's storytelling, Glen remarked, “It’s just really good storytelling by David [Macpherson]; it’s very compelling to find out what’s happening.” So, there’s hope—if viewers engage with the series, it might pave the way for more thrilling content.

At the moment, Prime Video has yet to announce whether The Rig will be renewed beyond its current season. Nevertheless, considering the swift greenlight for season two just one month after the debut of the first season, viewers can remain optimistic about news concerning their beloved Bravo crew.

No matter the outcome, fans can catch up on the second season now, immersing themselves once again in the suspenseful world of The Rig. Will the tension and thrill captivate new viewers and secure the show’s future? Only time will tell, but the cast's commitment and the audience’s response are promising indicators.
