The Blue Supermoon Lights Up August Skies

For stargazers, this astronomical event marks the first of four consecutive supermoons this year.

The Blue Supermoon of August 2024 is set to amaze stargazers this month, marking a rare celestial phenomenon. This stunning event combines two astronomical occurrences: a Supermoon and a Blue Moon.

It will reach its peak fullness on Monday, August 19, at 2:26 PM ET, but those hoping to catch it will likely need to wait until sunset to see it bright and beautiful. According to NASA, this event is especially rare, with another pairing not expected until 2037.

Supermoons occur when the moon is within 90% of its closest distance to Earth, appearing up to 14% larger and shining approximately 30% brighter than usual. This dazzling sight will dominate the sky for three full days, from August 18 through August 21, giving everyone ample opportunity to catch the magic.

Speaking of rarity, let’s dig deep—what exactly defines a Blue Moon? Contrary to what the name implies, it doesn't actually involve any blue coloring but rather refers to the number of full moons appearing within specific timeframes.

There are two definitions for Blue Moons: the first being the second full moon within one calendar month and the second being the third full moon within one astronomical season, which consists of four full moons. The upcoming moon falls under the latter definition, officially dubbed the Sturgeon Moon.

Interestingly enough, the term 'supermoon' was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle back in 1979, yet they've become commonplace, appearing three to four times each year. This month is particularly special because it's the first of four consecutive supermoons culminating on November 15, 2024, making this August's spectacle all the more anticipated.

If weather conditions permit, stargazers can spot the moon appearing vibrant and full as it rises on Monday night. It’s recommended to find high ground or locations with clear horizons to capture the entirety of its splendor, preferably during moonrise when it glows with shades of orange and hovers just above the horizon.

For those curious about whether the moon will actually appear blue, the answer is no. While sometimes atmospheric conditions can create visual anomalies giving the moon blue hues—generally through smoke or dust scattering light—this evening will showcase the classic milky-gray lunar visage.

Looking back, the last super blue moon graced the skies just about a year ago, on August 30, 2023. Since celestial sightings captivate many, this month’s blue supermoon offers yet another chance to marvel at its stunning beauty.

NASA anticipates remarkable views over the next several months due to the four supermoons lined up within such short periods. After this month's show, the subsequent supermoons will occur on September 17, October 17, and November 15 this year.

So, what’s the best way to witness this celestial marvel? Clear skies will be the fundamental element, of course, and choosing an optimal time right after sunset allows viewers to enjoy the moon’s glow at its most appealing.

Space enthusiasts might want to prepare their cameras and binoculars for this delightful spectacle. A pair of binoculars can provide close-up views of surface features, enriching the overall experience for those appreciating the moon up close.

For astronomy buffs and casual stargazers alike, the Blue Supermoon offers not just visuals but also cultural significance, with various names attributed to this lunar event from different Native American tribes. For example, the name Sturgeon Moon connects back to the time when the fish were most easily harvested.

With all this excitement, moon watchers can look forward to another stunning view not to be missed. Don't forget to mark your calendars, grab your friends and family, and enjoy this magical event!

Indeed, whether you're perched on your balcony or out at your favorite park, make the most of this luminous August evening and take time to relish the wonders of our universe. So here’s wishing all skywatchers clear skies and perfect views as they partake in this remarkable lunar event!
