The Apprentice Film Explores Trump's Rise Amid Controversies

Ali Abbasi's bold biopic showcases Donald Trump's complex early years and turbulent relationships

With the release of The Apprentice, the biographical film delving deep Into Donald Trump's early years, the cinematic world buzzes with excitement, controversy, and intrigue. Directed by Ali Abbasi and based on the screenplay penned by journalist Gabriel Sherman, this film shines the spotlight on Trump's tumultuous rise through the competitive and often cutthroat New York real estate market during the 1970s and 80s. Amid financial troubles and legal challenges, The Apprentice aims to present not just the man's life but the complex interpersonal dynamics surrounding him, particularly his relationship with the notorious Roy Cohn.

A Dark Comedy on Power and Influence

The Apprentice presents Trump's evolution through the lens of his partnership with Cohn, portrayed by Jeremy Strong, well-known for his role in Succession. The film's setting captures the gritty and vibrant aesthetic of pre-Disneyfied New York, allowing viewers to gain insight not just Into the characters but also Into the era's cultural backdrop. Sebastian Stan, recognized for his role as Bucky Barnes in the Avengers franchise, embodies Trump, adding layers to the already complex portrait of the former president.

Upon its premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, The Apprentice generated significant discussions surrounding its representation of Trump—a man still at the center of political and social controversies. Following the film's initial reception, which featured both praise and scathing criticism, Abbasi emphasized the uniqueness of his artistic vision, diverging from traditional biopics by adopting elements reminiscent of punk rock, highlighting the wild and unpredictable essence of the characters depicted.

Navigational Troubles and Revisions

Since its premiere, the film has undergone several edits, refining its focus. Abbasi mentioned during interviews the necessity of prioritizing Trump’s character development over extraneous subplots, one involving alleged mob ties connected to cement delivery for Trump Tower construction. According to Abbasi, maintaining attention on Trump's emotional arc and dealing with family dynamics, particularly after the death of his brother, became pivotal. He firmly believes this direction will resonate with audiences more effectively than previous versions filled with potential distractions.

“We started and finished this film’s post-production within just three months—a rough yet exhilarating experience,” Abbasi noted. His endeavor was to encapsulate the raw, edgy reality of Trump's formative years, battling expectations imposed by traditional biopics. “This was not just filming; it was crafting something true to life. The essence of punk rock isn’t just music; it’s rebellion against norms, which resonates through the characters we aimed to depict.”

The editing process saw not only the removal of certain scenes but also the addition of others deemed necessary to enrich the emotional stakes, particularly the dynamic between Trump and Cohn. The film's ending was also refined, focusing on imagery symbolizing Trump's ambition against the backdrop of American patriotism and grandeur.

Legal Controversies Surrounding Production

The funding for the project itself wasn't straightforward either. Initially backed by billionaire donor Dan Snyder, issues arose when Snyder expressed discontent with the final content. Sherman adjusted his approach, eventually collaborating with Kinematics, indirectly tied to Snyder, to secure the additional funds needed to finalize production. Much of the hesitation from major Hollywood studios stemmed from fears about repercussions should Trump regain political power, reflecting the current culture of caution surrounding productions involving figures like Trump.

Box Office and Reception

Critics have been divided, with some lauding its bold, irreverent take on Trump, whilst others viewed it as sensationalized or irrelevant. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw criticized the film’s depth, calling it “obtuse,” whereas Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described it as “sharp and scathing,” noting the film's ability to provoke thoughtful conversation about its subject matter.

Cultural Reflection and Impact

Beyond its biographical essence, The Apprentice prompts viewers to reflect on the cultural and political climate of the periods it portrays. Abbasi seeks to disturb the neat narratives often presented, instead opting to reveal the crass realities and moral ambiguities gripping both Trump and Cohn’s lives. This deliberate choice to depict flawed characters challenges audiences to reassess what they know—or think they know—about these infamous figures.

“By infusing punk rock energy, we expose characters who don't follow societal rules or norms. They exist on the fringes, just like much of the music from the era,” Abbasi expressed. He hopes this energy becomes infectious, stirring audiences’ imaginations and generating conversation beyond theatre walls.

The Road Ahead

Despite the controversies and mixed reviews, The Apprentice has already made substantial waves prior to its wide release. It poses hard-hitting questions to audiences about celebrity, power, morality, and the chaotic pursuit of the American Dream within the major political and consequential historical backdrop, making it both relevant and pressing as the election approaches.
