Thailand's Youth Team Proudly Competes At Asian Junior Squash Championships

Despite challenges, young athletes prepare for greater goals at upcoming SEA Games and Olympics.

Thailand's squash youth team made its mark at the South China Group, Asian Junior Team Championships 2025, held from February 14 to 16 in Hong Kong. Competing against 104 athletes from 15 different countries, the team, comprised of Nathapath Theerasin, Akkaradet Akkharhinya, Rawaiphan Limpaboon, and Noppachonnak Booranakul, finished with determination, achieving 10th place overall.

Managed by Nattakitt Jiwasuwan and coached by Mr. James Mentick and Mr. Luis Boonsinsuk, the young athletes faced tough competition this year as they entered Group C of the tournament. Countries including China, Hong Kong, India, South Korea, and Japan were also part of this prestigious event. With each match, the Thai team not only fought for points but also accumulated invaluable experience on the international stage.

During the championships, the 45th Annual General Meeting of the Asian Squash Federation took place. Akkarin Hiranprueks, the Secretary of the Thai Squash Association, represented Thailand as the Southeast Asian vice president. This meeting was pivotal as it announced Thailand as the host for the Asian Youth Squash Championships scheduled for 2027, along with the Annual General Meeting of the Asian Squash Federation.

Chalitrat Chantharubeksa, President of the Thai Squash Association, expressed pride in the achievements of the team and highlighted the importance of participation: "The athletes who participated gained valuable experience for their growth, and I expect these four will be key players for Thailand at the SEA Games." His optimism roots itself not just within local competitions but also the vision for the Olympiad. The upcoming SEA Games will take place later this year, making these young athletes potentially pivotal for their nation.

Looking beyond immediate competitions, the stakes for these athletes are growing. The next Olympic Games, set to occur in Los Angeles, California, will include squash for the first time. Chalitrat's comments aligned with the association's aspirations; he noted, "We aim to boost our athletes' world rankings, which will provide them opportunities to qualify for the 2028 Olympics. The national team aims to establish itself as contenders not just regionally but globally, and experiences like these are integral to their development."

With dreams of Olympic recognition on the horizon, the focus remains on nurturing young talent within Thailand. The accomplishments of the youth team at such international events cultivate skills and grit, setting the foundation for elevational growth within the sport.

Looking forward, hosting the Asian Youth Squash Championships creates excitement for upcoming generations, promising continued investments and support for squash development throughout Thailand. The squash community anticipates this as not just a national event but also as nourishment for future champions. With continued dedication and opportunities, these young athletes can dream far.”
