Thailand's Consumption Forecast For 2025 Amid Economic Concerns

Consumer spending is shifting as economic uncertainties loom, yet cultural engagement remains strong.

Thailand’s economic outlook for 2025 has taken center stage as consumer behavior shifts entirely against the backdrop of continuous economic uncertainty. According to findings released by the Hakuhodo Institute of Life and Living ASEAN (THAILAND), there is a correlation between the indulgence seen during the New Year celebrations and the grim reality facing consumers as they navigate the month of February.

Following the festive spending spike, there was a remarkable decline projected at around -1% concerning overall consumer expenditure nationwide. Factors prompting this reduction include job layoffs and increased financial prudence, causing many to tighten their belts as they focus on saving for emergencies.

Interestingly, this overall trend isn’t mirrored across all sectors of the economy. Despite the prevailing tight budget conditions, spending on gifts surged by +2% during the month often associated with love—February—highlighting the desire to maintain emotional connections amid wider financial restraint.

The rise and prominence of local brands were also spotlighted during this period. Aruanroj Laojaroenwong, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning at Hakuhodo, emphasized the entrenched cultural practices within Thailand, stating, "...การทำบุญถือเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของวิถีชีวิตคนไทย.." which translates to "...merit-making is part of the Thai way of life.." She noted how the intertwining of culture with commerce helps sustain consumer interest, especially through initiatives like demonstrating self-love and community involvement through spending during marked holidays and celebrations.

Adding to the complexity are the generational spending habits surfacing from data collected across diverse demographics. For Gen X consumers, quality and style became deciding factors for purchasing local fashion. Despite being the oldest group surveyed, Gen X exhibited the highest spending on Thai fashion brands, seemingly undeterred by age as they pursued appealing aesthetic options.

Gen Y, on the other hand, leaned heavily on the family unit during festival times. Notably, their spending surged during traditional gatherings, using the opportunities for gift-giving or family outings as they're seen as ideal opportunities to strengthen familial bonds. The festivals serve as moments of joy they eagerly anticipate.

Contrasting with this enthusiasm, Gen Z displays yet another perspective by investing time and money supporting the local T-Pop industry. Their engagement with music and entertainment has propelled this genre forward, demonstrating how cultural enthusiasm can help counter economic negativity.

While it’s clear the Thai economy faces obstacles, there are bright spots reflecting consumer resilience. The Hakuhodo survey’s results show the percentage of happiness among consumers decreased by -1% compared to the previous December. Nevertheless, many individuals actively seek out small pleasures to nourish their spirits. Cultural expressions, particularly those sourced from local artisans or brands, stand out as sources of pride and joy.

Punyavee Rungwilairach, Senior Strategic Planner at Hakuhodo, reveals: "...เรื่องที่สังคมไทยให้ความสนใจในขณะนี้ ไม่พ้นเรื่องของความปลอดภัยและความยุติธรรม.." Translated, it means "...the current main interests within Thai society revolve around safety and justice..." His insights reflect how social issues impact consumer confidence, exacerbated by rising crime rates and global unrest.

Moving forward, it’s imperative for brands and businesses, not only to comprehend these shifting trends but also to adapt to the Thai lifestyle and cultural undercurrents. While the spending may be declining overall, opportunities abound for brands willing to innovate and engage communities through culturally relevant campaigns. This responsiveness may well turn today’s economic struggles and anxieties toward sustainable growth and revitalization, especially as major festivals and consumer gatherings loom on the horizon.

Thailand’s path toward economic healing is multifaceted, requiring awareness of consumer sentiment and cultural significance. The interconnectedness of economic conditions, individual spending choices, and thriving cultural practices paints a vivid picture of what awaits the consumers and businesses moving forward.
