Thailand U23 Team Faces Challenges At Doha Cup 2025

Despite losses, coach Takayuki Nishikawa aims to strengthen team for future competitions

In a challenging series of matches at the Doha Cup 2025, the Thailand U23 national football team faced tough opponents, concluding the tournament with three losses. Under the guidance of head coach Takayuki Nishikawa, the team experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as they battled against the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Croatia.

The tournament began on a disappointing note for the Thai squad, who lost 0-1 to the United Arab Emirates in their opening match. Despite the setback, Nishikawa remained optimistic about the team's potential, emphasizing the need for connection and understanding among the players. "We need to be more connected and must try to understand each other and learn to play together," he stated, highlighting the importance of teamwork.

In their second match, Thailand faced Qatar, where they initially took the lead with a goal from Jakkaphan Praisuwan. However, the game turned when Qatar equalized through an own goal by Natthawut Wongsaart, followed by a second goal from Rashed Abdullah, handing Thailand a 1-2 defeat. Nishikawa reflected on the match, saying, "I want to see continuity in our play. I think this game was better than the last, especially regarding our system and style of play. I’m pleased with how the team assisted each other in scoring. It’s important for us to maintain control of the game and pressure our opponents effectively."

The final match of the tournament saw Thailand pitted against Croatia, where they faced another tough challenge, ultimately losing 1-3. Despite the disappointing results, Nishikawa expressed gratitude for the experiences gained during the tournament and the lessons learned from competing against stronger teams. "This experience is invaluable, and although the players may feel regret over the results, it’s essential for their growth and development," he noted.

Upon returning to Thailand, Nishikawa announced plans to strengthen the team by scouting additional players for the U23 squad. "From now on, the coaching staff will select more players to join the Thailand U23 team. The competition within the team will increase, and those who have not yet been selected will always have opportunities if they perform well in the Thai League," he explained.

Looking ahead, Thailand U23 will regroup for a training camp in preparation for future competitions, including the Asian Championships U23 qualifiers in September 2025 and the SEA Games, which Thailand will host in December 2025. Nishikawa is keen on ensuring that the team continues to improve and develop its skills. "I think there’s still much to adjust, both in understanding the players and in blending our playing styles. Players need to return and focus on developing their physicality and skills to strengthen the national team further," he said.

As the U23 team gears up for these upcoming challenges, Nishikawa emphasized the importance of support from fans. "I want to thank the Thai fans for their encouragement and for following our team throughout the tournament. Their support means a lot to the players and everyone involved with the team," he concluded.
